The Silmarillion

United Kingdom

I am not normally a fan of J.R.R.Tolkien and I have not read his other books or watched any of the films . But when I found this book in a big box of books that I brought from an auction , I thought I would find out more. The Silmarillion is a collection of stories that were written by the author before he even wrote any of his other more famous books. In fact this book was published by his son, Christopher, some time after his death.

I have not watched any of the movies and I have only recently started to read the books. These books are so different from the books that I normally read and I have found them rather hard going.

@cahaya1983 There are a lot of strange names and places to remember while reading the stories. Not to mention all the weird creatures involved.

I have not been interested in his writing before now. Maybe this book will change my view about this sort of thing. It does seem like the sort of book that would capture my imagination with all those strange places and names to remember. Do you like this sort of book?

The Silmarillion is probably best described as a sort of Bible of Middle Earth. It recounts the events of Middle Earth's ancient history, of its First Age. The books would probably be truly appreciated by those who enjoy world building, and/or the story of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Which is why people usually get into it from reading those books first. But if reading The Silmarillion before the other books makes you curious about the rest, then Welcome to Middle Earth.

Have you heard of` The Lord of the Rings' or `The Hobbit' ? It is a similar story to these better known books that were written by the same author.
