Hurricane Season

United States

Those who are impacted by the hurricane season (I am, living in Miami), what type of precautions or preparation have you taken? Besides the usual guidelines, I would love to hear any tricks or tips that could be useful. Here's one, as an example: Putting all your documents into a plastic sealed container so they don't get water damage. Your turn!

My nephew has a plan to rent a van for all six of us and our six cats to leave Lake Charles and find a relative who will give us a hotel to stay until the storm passes.

@AnneUser That will be taken care of by relatives who have experience dealing with hurricanes in the past.

Just be sure to have enough gas. For Hurricane Irma, there was so much uncertainty right to the end as to whether the hurricane would move ne or nw up the florida coast. People drove in all directions, and of course, the gas hoarders set in early, resulting in empty stations everywhere.

I live in Connecticut during hurricane season and stay away from our condo in Palm Beach county until hurricane season is over. Here, we use a generator when we lose power.

A generator is a huge lifesaver.

@AnneUser Tell me about it. Lived through many hurricanes without one. We have well water and when we have no power, we have no water for anything.

That's already a recommendation and one that many people do. When I needed a filing cabnet for my documents, (the ones I don't store digitally) I bought a plastic water proof box to store them in. I also keep records on my phone, and a backup charger charged at all times.I also make sure my phone is charged, too. The cats carriers are within easy reach, too. It's set up so if we have to leave in a hurry we can.

Those are good. Something we often forget is that we can (hopefully) charge our phones in the car too if the electricity goes down.
