Day 23 Genesis 35:9 And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came out of Padanaram, and blessed him. 10 And God said unto him, “Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name:” and he called his name Israel. 11 And God said unto him, “I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins; 12 “And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land.” 13 And God went up from him in the place where he talked with him. 14 And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of stone: and he poured a drink offering thereon, and he poured oil thereon. 15 And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, Bethel. People go through many changes in their lives. One common change is a person’s name. Not only is there a name change when a person marries, but people change their first name. They shorten their name, give themselves nicknames, or go by something different to define them. God changed Jacob’s name. He made the change before Jacob met Esau, and made it permanent when God told him to go to Bethel where Jacob met Him the first time. When God told him about his new name, Jacob set up a pillar and poured out an offering to God. As Christians, you receive a new name when you accept Jesus as Savior and Lord. Whatever your name was when you were born, God added to it when you became His. Do you know your new name? It is Christian. You are a child of God. Just as every person born into Jacob’s family became known as Israelites, you are known as Christians. One day you will receive another name only known between you and God. Revelation 2:17 He who hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says unto the churches; To him that overcomes will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knows saving he who receives it. Your new name will define you just as your name, Christian, defines you. Go meet with God today and let Him define who you are in Him. Let’s pray: Father, you know me and the name You gave me when I became Your child. Help me meet with You often so my life is defined by my close relationship with You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen. Name changing has so many incidents in the Bible. And God knows it for it has a purpose spiritually.

That's a good explanation of why God changes our names sometimes inwardly, sometimes outwardly. Jesus did this with Saint Peter too. A name change is an indication of our meeting God, and so the personal relationship between God and ourselves becomes enamoured of us in a new way, and this name change symbolises the changes made in us, when we allow God into our life.
