Sorry I Have Been MIA

I live in Georgia currently but moved from CT 7 years ago. My mom died in March and my brother and I have been up at her house in CT since Monday trying to go through all of her stuff and get ready for a yard sale on Saturday. She and my Dad had accumulated more stuff than you can imagine and we are overwhelmed, to say the least. We are having a big yard sale Saturday all day and Sunday 1/2 the day. There are vintage items, antiques, household, Christmas wrap and ornaments, lawn tractors and equipment, old tools, old bottles, and oh so much more. We are hoping to raise enough money to have a cleaning company come in and clean the whole house so we can get it on the market soon, as the market is still good right now. Prepping for a yard sale is very tiring. I have even been too busy and tired to log into myLot. Have you ever had a yard sale or garage sale? Was it a success or a flop?

Oh man that made me tired just reading your post! That is a big job to do all in one week? Oh my!! The best garage sales that I have been involved with were ones we held annuallty at The Mother's of Twins Club. We always had a ton of people show up and we also did a lot of shopping among ourselves. Good luck with the cleanout and the sale!

@Kouponkaren That's good. Do you have to go back to get rid of the rest or did ya'll donate the remaining? That is such a tough and hard job to do!

@kareng Thanks for the good luck wish. It is all over now and I am glad it is. We didn't sell everything but got rid of a large amount. I am glad to be back home now though.

Oh yes, I can imagine. We cleared out my mom's house after she moved to a retirement complex. She and my dad had lived there for 60 years. Unbeknownst to me, we also had stored my grandpa's stuff!

@petatonicsca Wow, that must have been even more than we had to deal with. It's a mess going through it, all but so good when it is done and over with, don't you agree?

@jstory07 I never made very good money until this sale. But my parents had accumulated a LOT of stuff over the years and most of it we did not have a sentimental attachment to, so that made it easier to let things go.

I am sorry for your Mom. I lost my Mom two years ago and I had to do the same. She lived in her apartment during 62 years, you can imagine how many things I found inside. I never had a yard or garage sale.

@Kouponkaren I also had to go through everything in the middle of summer. I could not even bring home too many things, my Mother lived in Italy, I have to cross a border to come home.

@LadyDuck Thanks on the sorry. Sorry about your mom. My parents lived together in a farmhouse. There were 2 floors, a side porch, a basement and an attic...all full of stuff. It was exhausting to go through it all, in the heat of the summer. I am just glad it's done now.

You're going through a tough time. Physically and emotionally draining. It's difficult to sort through a mountain of a lifelong accumulation, most with a sentimental value. I'm sure you're keeping very busy. Prepping for any garage sale is hard work. This must be even more difficult. I've had several garage sales over the years and each one of them was successful. I got rid of unused items and profited handsomely.

@vikingswest1 I have never really profited financially until this sale. The yard sale ended up being successful, but it was so much work both emotionally and physically. I am glad it's all over now.

@Kouponkaren I'll bet you are. This was a tougher sale than just a normal one.

Now I want to go back to bed. I know what clearing a house is like when someone has passed. I was lucky with my parents as they lived next door. I just boxed everything up and then had an auction. That made sure it all sold.

@Kouponkaren We even sold the property that way. It made closing out the estate easy.

@wolfgirl569 An auction? Now that's an interesting way to get rid of stuff. Our yard sale is over and I don't think there's enough stuff left to have an auction, but that's a good idea.

We call it garage sale here in the Philippines. My youngest sister conducted one ages ago and I think she was able to accumulate just the right sum from out of the things she wanted to rid off. Glad you and your brother had a sibling bonding going through your parents' stuff. Surely you must have kept something of value that would remind you both of your parents. My own mother sent me all her photo albums from California. I still have to collate the keepsakes for posterity purposes. Take a good rest!

@prashu228 Yes, it was a lot of tiring work and we were exhausted at the end of the week. Glad it's done and over with now.

I have thought about it, but that is as far as it ever goes. My mom has one yearly and does well though.

Wow, if she does well annually, that's great. And maybe she is getting rid of stuff now so that when she goes, you won't have too much to deal with? That would be great.

Yard sales are a ton of work. Then people don't want to pay what you ask for items and low ball you...it's frustrating. You earn every penny you get from a yard sale. I hope it goes well for you.
