I took my daughters bottle away from her on her first birthday. I just told her that she is a big girl now and did not need a bottle. thankfully she agreed.

My 3 oldest kids were all off the bottle by the time they turned 13 months. Each was down to just 1 bottle a day (usually before bed) by the time they turned 1 so I just took it away and that was it. My son took the longest to get rid of the bottle because he used to suck on a bottle or water at night because he wouldn't take a pacifier to help with his urge to suck. I broke the habit by giving him an empty bottle to suck on. He gave that up after a month or so. My middle daughter actually stopped using a bottle at 11 1/2 months. We ran out of formula so we just switched her to whole milk then. My kids never drank anything but formula (or water for my son) from a bottle and never once had formula in their sippy cups so it was an easy transition. I also started using sippy cups when they were 5 months old. They were pretty good at drinking from them by the time they were 9 months old.

My oldest weaned himself at 9 months, and i plan on weaning my littlest at a year. I cannot imagine going longer than that.. (i'm nursing) i suppose if i was bottle feeding it wouldn't matter as much.

The best thing is to decide how well the child is using a cup. You may start to wean the child during the day and then gradually by night. Sometimes the bottle is a security thing as it was with my son. With my grandson he has held onto the bottle because he has a baby brother and wants to have a bottle when the baby does. Trust your childs decision on when he or she is ready to give it up.

I started slowly giving my kids table food and sippy cups at 10 months. I did it slowly over a few months. By the time there were a year old they were ready to get complete off the bottle.
