There were A LOT of differences. There were parts taking out of the movie such as the parachuter falling down from the sky and parts put in like Piggy's little Camberly bit there. Here, you can find more about it here: http://cinemaroll.com/cinemarolling/movie-lord-of-the-flies-1963/

There are two film versions which are easy to identify, one being black and white and the other in colour. I have seen the black and white version which is very close to the book. I watched it whilst studying the text at school. At the time I disliked the fact it was black and white which and that you couldn't see to clearly in the night scenes. DUh, the follies of youth, of course you can't see to clearly at night, stoopid technicolour distorting reality in my brain! But that aside, I thought it was rather good - I have a bad habit of nit-picking when books and films are too disimilar. I have heard though that the colour version is different from the book as the tried to Hollywood it.
