The Sweetest Stray Kitty!

Canada

My partner and I decided to go take a walk last night to the park. Although it was a chilly evening, and I have severe anxiety (don't like to go out much anywhere) I still went out because I wanted to continue to have a nice anniversary with her. When they say everything happens for a reason, it truly does. On the way back home I told her lets check the mail, I was supposed to get samples of stuff from Sampler, which did come in. One of the things was a kitty treat. After getting that from the mail, a random black kitten about 5-6 months old ran at us, wanting attention. We petted him, and continued on. He kept following us. So I said, "Hey, give me that package, I'm going to give him some of that food". So I did, he scarfed it down. And after, followed us all the way back home. Wasn't sure what to do. We already have two cats, can't have more. As soon as we opened the door, he zoomed on in! It felt so weird, like he knew us somehow. But he was just a stray.. I wanted to keep him so bad, but we let him back out. Which didn't last long. I felt guilty, we both did. So she went back out to look for him. As soon as she made a noise, he was back in the door, even before she could go back in. So we let him stay overnight in the front room, gave him food, water and a bed to sleep on. Today she called SPCA. They were more than happy to take him in. And I know they will care for him there, and some lucky family will adopt him. I've never seen such a sweet stray cat in my life. I could pick him up, hold him, no fuss. He purred so loud, he loved the attention. I would of kept him, if I could have. But right now, I feel bittersweet. Got all emotional when my aunt and her friend came to take him to SPCA. But I also know, we did the right thing. I'll always wonder though, if he was our anniversary gift, but I do know, he will never be forgotten on our special day. That's for sure! And I hope wherever he does go, he will be happy. Any family will be lucky with a sweetie like him! (Image is mine)

I love black cats, and when I don't have one, a cat with a coat like my Henry's will do.

I'm not a cat person; but if I were you, I would have kept him.

The cat in the picture is a bit too bulky, but otherwise is the spitting image of my Mollie (2002-2012). Boy, do I still miss her. I called her "the preacher cat" because of that little white spot on her black fur.

This is very special and on your anniversary too. You did do the right thing of course. He looks a really loving kitty. I would not have wanted to let him go either.

From the moment cats domesticated themselves, humans have found it impossible to let them go. And, that is why (even though it is illegal to feed stray and feral cats in most jurisdictions) most law enforcement officers do not enforce that law. And did you know that when you feed a stray or feral cat (even if it stays outside), in the eyes of the law that cat is now yours? So if it leaves pawprints on your neighbor's car, poops in his flower bed, and scratches his grandchild when she pulls the cat's tail, you are the one he is going to harass, even though there are five other unknown neighbors in a two-block radius who are feeding the cat as well (so you are not its only owner).

Once I had him scanned for a microchip, I would have kept him in a heartbeat as well.

I see that you posted this on October 28, 2021, and that you are in Canada. But did you know that (at least in the United States) October 27 is national black cat day? It is to promote the adoption of black cats. Sadly, some mean, ugly, nasty, ignorant people abuse black cats on the days leading up to and including Halloween. So I am glad you, your partner, your aunt, and her friend that precious kitty safely to the SPCA.
CATS are among one of the most popular house pets, with the average person owning two felines. While cat lovers celebrate their pets every day, there is a special date on which black cats get honor…
