President Biden has extended the student loan payment moratorium until May 1

I was surprised when I went to make my monthly student loan payment in March or April of 2020 that there wasn't a due date until like 6 months later. The payment date kept getting pushed forward. Most recently it was set to expire on January 31. Biden stated that it was the last extension. Members of Congress lobbied him to extend it due to ongoing financial difficulties as a result of this COVID crap. Today he announced another extension until May 1. I haven't needed the delay and have been making the regular payment each month. I just want to be done with them. I'm on my 21st year of work and still owe like $4000. That is absurd. The good news for those who aren't able to make the payments is that no interest has been accruing during this time. I'm glad that he extended it. There is a lot of pressure on him to forgive student loan debt. I think Biden said he was open to cancelling $10,000 of debt per person but not the $50,000 that others were calling for. I am eligible for a public service debt cancellation since I work for the public and have made 100 consecutive payments in 10 years. My ex refused to let me apply for it and when I went to look up what I had to do it was so complicated that I just gave up. Oh well. It is an $87 payment each month for however long.

I'm glad to hear you are paying your debts. That is awesome that some are still taking on their responsibilities. I don't think they should be cancelling these debts. People signed onto these debts, let them pay them off. What about the people who paid their way through are they going to get a refund? That would be a lot of money that this country cannot afford to just write off.

I just feel bad for the college graduates who are in hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt. A lot of them won't even wind up using their degree. College shouldn't cost so much and students shouldn't have to put themselves into so much debt just to get a degree.

@NJChicaa You might be kind of right but they made that choice and should have thought about that before signing for it. They did have a choice.

@NJChicaa — I think it’s a scam that people preach that “everybody” needs a college degree. The guy who fixed my toilet didn’t have a college degree, and he makes more than you or I do with one!

You mean they won’t let you make payments now? My bank “protests” (as in “no payment is due now” messages), but they still take my money when I make an extra car payment.

Those student loans in my country end up being terrible for those who study careers where they don´t earn too much.

That is one of the hardest things for students to bear the repayment of their debts, I was lucky to go to university at a time when I got all kinds of grants because my mom was my only parent. I had no student debt,

I'm glad to hear that you continue to make payments. Excusing $50,000 of debt would be catastrophic to the schools! I hope that never goes through. There are hundreds of jobs out there now and no one to fill a lot of them. I don't know what's up with that! These are low-paying AND high-paying jobs. I saw one local job for a librarian trainee right in my town for $73,000 to start. If I could still work, I'd jump on that.
