“Fantasy is the impossible made probable. Science Fiction is the improbable made possible.” --------------- Rod Serling Today is Saint Stephen's Day and The Second Day Of Christmastide. I know a little but not much about St. Steve and his day---Just between you and me, he isn't much of a Saint. Don't quote me on that. The boss frowns on professional honesty among us Saints when it's "negative." Christmastide is long and convoluted with many different streams. So we won't talk about it, either. That leaves Boxing Day, which is, luckily, also today. We could talk about the original purpose of Boxing Day---To give gifts to the poor. But we won't because it would bring us to the fact that the poor are as ignored, scorned and marginalized as ever, especially on Boxing Day and that's just depressing. We could talk about the more modern Role-Reversal aspect. But that would lead us in directions the MyLot Censor frowns on. We could talk about the Bank Holiday attached to it but big deal. The banks will be closed tomorrow---Because today is Sunday and the banks are closed anyway. That leaves the sport of boxing, which seems to be a natural for Boxing Day. Few people see it that way but we aren't going to let that stop us. That's why I got in my Time Machine today and went to New York on Monday, March 8, 1971 to see the Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier fight. I'd tell you how it turned out but I know how you kids feel about SPOILERS. And then I stayed an extra nine days for St. Patrick's Day---He's not much of a Saint, either but he does have a pretty fair holiday. I'd tell you how that part of the trip went but that would get us in trouble with the Censor again.

The only holiday I know about this month is Christmas.

Don't forget New Year's Eve. It's the only other one you really need to worry about.

@RubyHawk That's a lot safer and less annoying way of doing it.

@xander6464 I won’t be out. I’ll probably watch firework on TV and the Peach drop.

I most inventive look at this date in history. However you forgot it's also Mummer's day if you're in Cornwall, where you put on garish homemade masks and "disguises" and go dancing and singing to your neighbor's house until they invite you in for drinks. (Kind of like Halloween?)

They have Mummer's Day parade in Philadelphia. I never went to it when I lived there but I would have if anyone told me I would get invited in for drinks. It does sound a lot like Halloween.

@FayeHazel It was fun. A lot of people say that Philadelphia is boring and there is some truth to that but being from a small town in Iowa, I found it to be quite adequate. And it's only 90 minutes to New York or Atlantic City. Five hours to be Boston and 2.5 hours to Washington DC by train, so the location was excellent. All I remember from the little bits I saw on TV is the really strange costumes. There's also a Mummer's Museum, which is all medical oddities and I don't know if that's in any way connected to the Parade Mummers.

@xander6464 Cool, what was Philadelphia like when you lived there? I wonder how their parade compares to the Cornish tradition....

So if it’s “the feast of Stephen” AFTER Christmas that means “Good King Wenceslas” isn’t a Christmas carol!

You have found the Golden Christmas Music Loophole. I wonder if it applies to any other songs.

@xander6464 — of course. How many of them just mention cold or snow and get listed as a “Christmas song”? “Jingle Bells” “Sleigh Ride” “Winter Wonderland” “Baby It’s Cold Outside” I’m surprised they haven’t tried to turn Styx’s song “Snowblind” into a Christmas song…..

@FourWalls Guilt by association. Get played once in December and you're forever branded a Christmas song. Except for Snowblind....finding out why is going to require some research.

That's fine and it's much easier than trying to remember all the other days it is.
