My Student Has Teary Eyes

Before the end of a particular class online, my student has asked me a question why incurred a lot of absences last month. I can see how she wanted to know the matter and it is too personal. I just told her that it is a family matter. It seems she knew what had happened to my mother in heaven now. The bottom line is that my life is not an open book for everybody. I was a teacher for forty years. Occasionally, a pupil asked me personal questions. I never revealed any details. Especially young teachers at the beginning of their career are often too open. Pupils are pupils and not my children or buddies. A certain distance should be kept.

Whereas I am a different person. I would have told her what had happened to me as I don't think there is anything to hide in it. Yes, we should draw a line for the things we should reveal to others and whatnot.

It's good to keep boundaries between yourself and your students. I don't generally reveal too much personal stuff to people I'm not close to

I am very secretive whether or not it's something personal or not. I just love the peace of people not knowing what is going on in my life. And I never ask anyone about their businesses unless they tell me themselves.
