Planning for Our Wedding

March 26, 2022 7:23pm CST
By the time my fiancé’s wedding and mine comes, it will be a year that it has taken us to plan. We have postponed our wedding twice and finally set our date as October 29th of this year. We are on a budget and have wonderful friends who fortunately are professionals in some of the services we are using. So far, we have the Venue, DJ, Photographer, Some Decorations, and My dress. We still have to get the food and more decorations. The venue is at a barn on a farm so our ceremony will be outside (if the weather permits) and reception in the barn. We have a honeymoon destination we are hoping we will get to visit but may need to do something local. My question is for those who are married or getting married, is a year too long to plan?

I think a year is good enough. An outdoor wedding is cool, but you have to think of a contingency plan if it rains as well.

@ihasaquestion We will be having around 60-70 guests and it’s a huge barn, open on all sides. Thank you,

It depends on the couple. My husband and I needed to get married quickly, in order to buy our house. With his father gone, both my parents gone, and me being estranged from my family... we opted for a wedding at the local court house. My "wedding present" was security allowing me to skip the medel dector and go for the wound. Being in a wheelchair, helped with that I am sure. They don't really make those detectors wide enough for wheelchairs. However, some people will spend a couple years or more, some spend less. It just depends on who you are, and how long you want to wait. If you're using a venu that books months in advance and so on.

Such good ideas! We booked our venue three months ago, it was the only date they had. Thank you for sharing.

Depends, but most of the time a year is good enough to plan out everything.

The goal is to plan a little at a time so we don’t get too overwhelmed.

In India marriages do take time as we have lot of expenditures which we start saving and get them like jewelry, clothes, venue booking etc.

Congratulations! I think a year is about right. You don't want to rush it. You want to get it just right. I'm glad you're finally managing to get round to it. It's horrible when you have to keep postponing. I hope everything is perfect and you have a great time. I also hope you get the honeymoon that you want and it's perfect too.

@JasminesMomma My pleasure. Yes, if you get overwhelmed with the planning, it's good to take your time and make sure you get it right. Do one thing at a time so you're not overwhelmed.

@sharonelton yes!!! I learned that the hard way in the beginning of planning, trying to do too many things at once. Thank you.

I don't think it's too long to plan. It gives you plenty of time to get everything you need in place. Also, that time will give you more time to research ways to save money on what you have left to do, including a honeymoon. For instance, if either of you have birthdays coming up, you could ask for gift cards for gas or hotels instead of a material present so that you could put those toward your honeymoon plans. It also gives you more time to try to save money for your honeymoon...or work a little extra (more posts on mylot maybe?) to earn extra money for the honeymoon you really want. Also, you can try to find coupons for food and shop sales for your decorations. When I got married the first time, we had 18 months to plan (not my choice...his) and I thought it was too long, but it gave me time to be very organized and I felt very prepared for the wedding when the day finally arrived. Best wishes and I hope you 2 live happily ever after!

I have gotten married 4 times... each time was different. There is no set time limit. Whatever works best for you is what you should do! Good luck with the preparation and enjoy your wedding day!
