is the media makeing us germaphobes

you always hear about gurm killing sprays and wipes and antibacterial stuff and germs are bad and so on but have we gone to far in trying to kill what we can't see. Is the media making us obbsesive conpalsive the disorder were a person feels compeld to wash there hands 3 times in one viset and count every step they take in the restroom is this becoming more previlent in today society ?
