Alcohol Top Ten: Whiskey in the Jar (#5)

Gee, I keep bouncing between tequila and whiskey. That’s okay, it’s about the song, not the booze mentioned in the title. (Do that in real life and you may have a headache for a month or two. ) I’m sure a few people had this one pegged to show up, and here it is! #5: Whiskey in the Jar - Thin Lizzy Hey, the boys are back in the countdown! This is a traditional Irish song, and Thin Lizzy was an Irish band. This doesn’t sound much like a pub tune, though, does it? If you want that, you’ll have to go to the version the Pogues and Dubliners did together. If this is too mellow, you may try the Metallica rendition. That’s what happens with traditional songs. They get recorded a lot. Wikipedia lists people as diverse as Bryan Adams, Christy Moore, Jerry Garcia and David Grisman, Burl Ives, and Peter, Paul, and Mary. And the versions are about that diverse, too. I think the best-known versions in the U.S., or in the rock world, are Metallica or Thin Lizzy, so I’m going with the Thin Lizzy version. Drink up! Whiskey in the Jar Traditional, arranged by Phil Lynott, Eric Bell, and Brian Downey Recorded by Thin Lizzy Released as a single, 1972 The Cork and Kerry mountains:

The guitar sort of reminded me of Lenny Kravitz. Very cool sound.

This was long before their hit (“The Boys Are Back in Town”).

I've never heard this song before. Not sure I actually like though. I'll check it out on youtube.

Makes sense. I found the rendition by GD and didn't like it either, I guess it ain't my kinda tune. Hmmm, I didn't see the Doors or GFR on the list though.

@rebelann — it’s one of those songs — especially when the Irish bands like the Pogues do it — that I guess you have to be drunk for.

There are so many different renditions of it, from pure folk to pure Irish pub, that you’re bound to find a whole lot of versions you don’t like. This is the one I used because it’s the first version of the song I heard.

He was good-looking. And wow was he energetic. They were part of my second-ever rock concert (a festival called Summer Jam II), and easily the best band all day.

@FourWalls It was a car. ------------ I wish they'd bring the Thin Lizzie. I miss running boards and I don't trust cars that don't have manual spark advance.

@xander6464 — I like running boards, but seeing Don Fanucci in The Godfather Part II jump on one kinda made me glad they’re gone.

Well, at least it wasn't country. I've never heard this one before.

Thanks for drinking, come back tomorrow. On second thought, the next one is country, so go watch the Key West cams instead.

They definitely did it more in a “traditional” way. It’s funny how people can take the same song and make it a completely different thing. Christy Moore’s folk version sounds almost like a protest song.

This is such an old, old song. A good 'round the piano' one.

Not the way they did it (or Metallica, for that matter). But yes, it’s listed as “traditional.” The first US recorded version I saw was Burl Ives in the early 1950s, which means there’s no telling how many times it was recorded in Ireland or England before it made its way to our shores.
