importance of singing varnam in a carnatic concert

The Carnatic music concert's tradition is to start with a varnam or a krithi on ganapathi. Praying Ganapathi at the start ok. but what is the reason to have a varnam in the beginning? varnam is a vocal exercise and ofcourse sets an atmosphere . what other reasons can there be. this is not to argue but curious to know why. can somebody give atleast 10 other reasons for the same?
