My local Firemen came to rescue my tangled US flag.

It was just another day. I went to check mail at the old family house. I had decided to remove the no trespassing sign as it was rather bold and sounded like I wanted to arrest any and everyone who might park on the property. I had my reasons, though, but I removed it after it had been there a couple of days. There were no items in the mail box. The house had been my family home and my father and my older brother lived there before they died, leaving it up to me to take care of everything except the legal part. My sister is the executrex of the estate, but I was determined to salvage all I could from the house. So I have done a lot since my older brother, John Davis Jr. died, on his 77th birthday on January 18th, and services at the gravesite took place on the 5th day of March at Calvary Hill. I had to check to make sure the house was secure and all doors locked and no sign of trespassing. Since the day he died, up to this very date, I have been busy at cleaning out the house, and taking care of the lawn, during this heat wave where it has been over 100 degrees on practically every day for over 30 days without relenting, with a few drops in temperature on one or two days with overcast skies, due to fires to the west of Dallas-Ft. Worth, west of Tarrant county. I looked up at the flag pole and the USA flag was wrapped around the pole at the top and tangled. I couldn't get it down. I tried but failed and I was very upset as this flag means a lot to me. I am a very patriotic Democratic American. The flag represents many things to many people but to me it means democracy and has nothing to represent Trump, as I am not a respector of fake presidents. My friend, however, an American Army combat vet, would differ with me on that. I had to get that USA flag down! So, I called the local 33 fire station and they immediately responded and had no problem having one of their men simply climb up the flag pole and bring it down. The fireman asked me if there was anything else they could do for me. I told the kind Dallas Fireman, "Thanks, you did me a great service. And my brother and my father as well as myself, all appreciate and support all of you for your service to the community." - and they left back to the fire station. No. 33 at the corner of West Illinois Avenue at Vernon, in Dallas, TX. I had to take that flag home and fold it up and then call my friend, who is a good friend who is a combat veteran from the Vietnam war. He told me he would burn the flag for me and properly dispose of it, as that is what he has always done. He and I may be on opposite sides of the political line but we both have the same absolute respect for our country. The US flag can be used for good reasons or for the wrong reasons. I fly it because I am a true American patriot. A Democrat and a Catholic. I pray for the safety and well being of all the US military as I always do. During Sunday mass at my local church, Saint Elizabeth of Hungary at Hampton Rd at Ledbetter, in Dallas TX we pray for the safety and well being of law enforcement officers and fire fighters and nurses and doctors on the frontline of Covid-19 as well as for the religious freedom of Ukraine. I fly both the USA flag as well as the Ukraine flag on my home property in solidarity for Ukraine peace against the murders and bombings of innocent families all across the Ukraine. I will likely drop off some coffee and a case of drinking water at our local 33 fire station in the very near future to repay the 3 firemen who took time to help me get that USA flag down and hand it back to me so I would not have to see it all twisted and torn from the winds

Wow! Very interesting reading. Why should the flag be burned? Condolences to you and your family on the passing of your father and elder brother.

That is what my friend, the Vietnam Army Vet told me he does with any damaged USA flag. I never questioned him on this, as I respect him for his service with the United States Army who was on the battle field on enemy lines and risked his life for this great nation. I would never question my friend as to why he would burn the flag. I am not ex miliatry. I have known about 4 people who were military. My friend who works at University of Texas Southwest Medical Center in Dallas was US Navy on the USS Comfort medical ship during Operation Desert Storm and another man who I once knew, who was the man who recorded our Jr. High School band and school choir, at W.E Greiner on Edgefield Ave in Dallas, Texas, who went by the name of Watergate, but was actually a fighter pilot in the US Air Force, worked for a company named The Production Source. I would like to have been in the military but when I turned 18, I went to the recruiting station for US Army and when I was told I had to wear an eye patch I backed out otherwise, I would have served. I felt bad about that. I regret that decision. It would have given me a lot of good strength of character. I did come very very close to the day of swearing in. I bet the recruiting officer got plenty mad at me for that. But I can't go back now and do it over as I am now about 65 years old and that window of opportunity is now closed.

@lookatdesktop l think you would have been a great asset to the military. Sorry about the questions but why were you expected to wear an eye patch?

@Kandae11 My right eye is called a LAZY EYE. I was diagosed with astigmatism as a child with ambliopia, when the brain allows the stronger, left eye, in my case, to take over because the right eye, unable to see well do to ambliopia, the left eye is dominant. I basiclaly have lived with this vision deficit all my life and so I wear dark sunglasses outside also to avoid too much strain on my eyes. I have a step daughter, who had severe gloucoma in her right eye and became legally blind in her right eye and she still managed to draw with a pencil very accurately. I could never see as good as I need to see to be a sharp shooter. My friend, however was a sharp shooter and my step son, who also was US Army, had an excellent eye and could shoot clay pigeons. If I did have perfect eye sight, I would have wanted to have become a US Army soldier. The closest I ever came to military was the Marching bands of Jr. High and High Schools. I was good at marching. For sure.

What a heartwarming story. I had some old flags that I took to the nearby VFW post for proper retirement. I was happy to make a small donation to them for the service as well. I know some Boy Scout troops also perform the service as part of their education. I don’t agree with Biden’s policies (I always say I supported Jo [Jorgensen], not Joe, in the 2020 election), but I pray for his health. The Bible commands us to pray for our leaders. It doesn’t say “Pray for the leaders you voted for or agree with.” Have a blessed day.

@lookatdesktop — I think we’re too far gone as a country. I hate to say that, but the monster machine he created will run without the T-man.

I also pray for Donald. Indeed, I really do. Pray for his loss of his first wife. I pray that Donald does not get back in in 2024. Not anti-GOP, just anti- Trump for office. The Jan 6 insurrection proves that Trump allowed the violence to escalate without doing anything to prevent it but rather, the opposite, did what he knew would ENCOURAGE IT!

Very good of those firemen to help with the flag. It breaks my heart when I see a flag tangled, torn, or tattered being flown.

Our firemen don't do that. It's our own lookout to hire someone to climb up at the top of the pole to hoist down the tangled flag. Usually we hire kid to do that.
