A dish of green olives, some stuffed with anchovies, some with jalapeños and some unadorned. A glass of very well chilled white wine. Strong winter sun streaming from a far horizon across empty fields and through a mesh of leafless branches to warm my face as I sit beside the window. No music plays other than the sing-song of words of an inoffensive little story by Alphonse Daudet that I'm reading from a second hand book with yellowed pages and a musty smell.

Two days ago my daughter Tania came. I got out a small tin with green olives stuffed with jalapeños. She said she did not like them. And I replied the same words she heard from me decades ago. I´ll open them and you eat one. If you hate them, you can spit it out where I don´t see it. She ate most of the small bowl where I had placed it I remembered Le petit chose when you mentioned Alphonse Daudet.
