I Learned Something About Myself Yesterday

My daughter came into my room yesterday afternoon and without even asking took my vacuum cleaner and loaned it to a neighbor. It make me mad and started my anxiety raising pretty quickly. This vacuum cleaner is not even a year old. A really nice Shark model that I paid $300 for when I had the COVID money from the government. This is the most I have ever paid for a vacuum cleaner and it is a prized possession. I wouldn't have been upset but the fact that this neighbor is a known drug addict and we all know how they are. I have visions of her pawning the vacuum cleaner and using the money for drugs. Or, paying off a drug debt with it. I was stressed because I don't know this neighbor at all. Only what my daughter has told me. So, I kept reminding my daughter and she did finally go over and get the vacuum cleaner back. I wonder how long it would have been gone if I hadn't reminded her. With all of this, I did learn something about myself. The less I am around people the less I trust them. Perhaps I do have a negative attitude and, perhaps I was being a bit petty but when you don't have much the things you do have mean something.

In your situation I would have been worried too. I don’t think you were unreasonable.

I'm glad. I felt bad and wondered if I was. You folks have made me feel much better about it.

You should not apologize. Your daughter should not take your things without permission. That cleaner is yours. Your room is yours. Your daughter needs to apologize.

I am going to talk to her. I felt sort of like I was being a bit petty but went back and forth about it in my mind.

Certain things should never be borrowed or loaned out. They include things that do not belong to the person loaning it out, and vacuums. Things that are picked up in the vacuum can be brought back to your home, such as fleas or mold, and then they are in your home. I would have been miffed too if it were my vacuum loaned out.

I hadn't thought of the vacuum bringing stuff back to our apartment. She did empty the vacuum so that was good.

Your daughter never should have lent out your vacuum cleaner without asking.
