I took a nap after dinner. Woke up to watch a couple of episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. As I deleted the second one I found I was on one of the KAID channels and a tour of Mackinac Island was just beginning. What luck! In case you don't know Mackinac Island is where "Somewhere In Time" was filmed which is one of my favorite movies of all time with Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeves. It has been my dream to visit the island at some point and stay at the Grand Hotel. Mackinac Island was a fort in the 1800s. It went back and forth between the British and America until after the War of 1812 when all properties went back to America and Mackinac Island was one of those properties. Today Mackinac Island is as it was in the 1800s with cobblestone streets, Victorian architecture, and horse-drawn carriages. A 3.8 square mile island where Henry David Thoreau visited in 1861 and wrote "lilacs". There are no automobiles on the island. Bicycles and horse-drawn carriages are the only modes of transportation. They have a ten-day lilac festival in June. It is my dream to travel by train from Boise to New Orleans. I would stay in New Orleans for several days enjoying the music, architecture, and food. I also want to do some of the tours around the city. I went to New Orleans back when I was on the road with the carnival but it was a Sunday night and the town was totally dead. So, after New Orleans, I board another train and travel up to Mackinac City where I take a ferry over to the island. I hope to go there in the early spring and enjoy the lilac trees, apple trees, and the Grand Hotel which is only open until October. I doubt I will ever get to see it but it is my dream.
