No onions in my kitchen

Now that I am at home more, I am noticing things in how I cook. One thing I noticed was the spices (or lack thereof) and I made a post about it. Thank you for all your responses. I learned from them that I seem to be unusual in not using onion and garlic. There's a reason for that. I didn't grow up with garlic being used. I like it, but don't really know how to use it. However, since I have had cats for the past 20 or so years, and onions and garlic are poisonous to cats and dogs, I decided to stop using onions in my cooking as well. This was because I had a dog and a couple of cats who would lick up anything that landed on the floor before I could scoop it up. So I was concerned. In between cats (I had about three catless months after my last cat of the first batch died and finding and rescuing Katsuji) I realized I could use onions again. I started trying them in stews and oh my were they ever delicious! Unfortunately, I apparently inherited my dad's "gut" reaction to onions, so it's probably best if I continue not to use them! Do you like onions? Garlic? How do you use them?

I put them in stews and recipes with beans or peas.l sometimes crush or chop a clove or 2 of garlic very fine and have it raw with a meal.

@kandae11 Isn’t raw garlic just the best? My wife doesn’t let me chew it raw.

@xFiacre When the garlic is chopped allicin is released which has antibiotic properties. When eating raw garlic the scent may linger on one's breath - so it is best to chew on parsley , mint , an apple . Or have some lemonade, milk or green tea afterwards. I won't advise chewing it raw. It is best mixed raw in food e.g. guacamole or any other foods.

They are, in fact, good for you, and I wish I could eat them with fewer opinions from my insides. Same with hot peppers.

@petatonicsca When I cook first I peel an onion and some garlic before I even decide what I’m going to be making.

I think maybe my parents didn't use them when we cooked so it doesn't occur to me.

All I will say that there is hardly a dish you can find served at my house that does not contain onions and garlic. That sh*t goes in everything and I just love both of them. lol

I like both onion and garlic. I even eat garlic raw when eating samgyupsal, which a Korean dish. These two are very important spices for me so that when missing I don't think my dish with taste any better..

I love Korean food in general but it doesn't always love me! Wish I could eat it more.

I can't imagine cooking without them and we have 6 cats and 2 dogs. I've heard in small amounts they aren't fatal.

Onions and garlic are used in everything my daughter and I cook. Depending on what the dish is, guides us in how much of each we use. Mostly, we use a LOT of them unless we're entertaining someone who has an allergy to them... I always have onions diced and waiting in the fridge for our next cooking project. We only use fresh garlic if we're making garlic toast to go with pasta. Otherwise, there is a large container of powdered garlic in the cabinet.

Come to think of it, my dad liked to make raw onion sandwiches. Just a slice of onion with salt and pepper between two pieces of bread.

@sica98 That sounds good. My dad would have added bacon to that, I think.
