The end of an era

Queen Elizabeth II was the only Monarch I have ever known. I’m not a strongly committed Monarchist but on the other hand, the country does need some sort of figurehead and on the whole people like to have someone to look up to, and the Queen fulfilled those duties admirably in every way. When I look at some of the alternatives from other countries, I am more in favour of the Monarchy! Now we have to get used to those small but all-pervasive differences – in due course we will have new coins with Charles III on them, new stamps, new post boxes, new words to the national anthem, new ‘by Royal appointment’ crests on products, new patrons of charities etc. When I think about it, my parents knew four monarchs in their lifetimes – George V, Edward VIII, George VI and Elizabeth II. My grandparents knew six – all the above plus Victoria (because she also reigned for such a long time) and Edward VII - so they witnessed a series of coronations, state funerals and all the other shenanigans. Now we really are entering a new era – and Charles III has a lot to live up to!

Queen Elizabeth 11 exemplifies the saying that "the position does not make the man, but the man makes the position." Despite the many scandals involving royal family members, the Queen somehow manages to retain the respect and admiration of her people. I also think Queen Diana would have been better than Queen Camilla.

Yeah i agree with you that Princess Diana is far more better that Camilla to be the Queen. I hope King Charles will follow the footsteps of his mother Queen Elizabeth. She is still beautiful even in old age.

@Gillygirl Why did the royal family not want Charles to marry Camilla? Even up till his marriage to Diana, Charles was still seeing Camilla and continued to do so after.

@Gillygirl yeah you're right but based on what i have read, it was prince charles who became unfaithful first.

Do you think he will live up to the legacy left by his mother?

@magallon I don't think it was the queen that was causing the problems for them... but I might be wrong. I don't pay much attention to the royal family. They aren't my king or queen.

@Gillygirl You're probably right. And his mother had time to grow into the role. I'm sure she made mistakes when she became queen... People just don't talk about those because they were so far in the past. Isn't Camilla his Consort, not Queen? (I really don't pay a lot of attention to the royals, so I could be misremembering something here. I apologize if I am.)

@fleura as one not in favour of monarchy at all I look around at what the rest of the world has. Not a lot to chose from! At least all shades of opinion can get behind a monarch so long as they are genuinely non partisan in politics, or at least play the public role in that way.

I would have more faith in the future if Parliament hadn't dispersed two weeks. After the prolonged inaction over the leadership campaign, this doesn't seem the best way to sort out the cost of living crisis.

They don't have much power, but a lot of duties... I wouldn't choose that role!

There’ll be a lot of pressure to the successor. I never really liked Prince Charles.

I pray Charles III will do his country proud. At least he has had many years of preparation for his part as king.

Well, given his parents lived long and his maternal grandmother lived 102 years it's possible he will live into his 90s at least.

@Fleura I was at a millitary show a few weeks ago where the army bands played it - for the Queen, at the end of the events - I left as hey struck up the song.

True, but that doesn't really impact our daily lives much. When does anyone sing the national anthem these days apart from events like the jubilee?

I can't think of anyone which such an unblemished record. She was an absolute marvel and so devoted to duty, her country, her people. I don't think many, monarchists or not, could say too much against her. The next few years will be interesting.

Queen Elizabet II really lived such a long time. I wonder if we can even reach 96.

Personally, at Charles age, I would have thought there was a way he could give up the throne to the next in line like Prince William because he should be happy to live his life the way he would want to for whatever years he has left but now he will have a life just to live for the throne, Will Camilla be with him in the castle?

Everyone is debating whether prince charles will do better than his mommy. Maybe give him some time. I am sure he will work it out
