Books are Not only for Reading

In a previous post, I ask fellow mylotters if they use books for any purpose other than reading. All said no. As the photo in this post shows, books can also have practical and utilitarian uses. Aside from using books for a door stop or to prop up broken chairs and tables, there are other uses from the mundane to the outrageous. Often used as a hiding place for money bills, documents, or weapons. It's also a weapon by itself. both for offensive (use as a projectile for squabbling spouses) and defensive. An anecdotal story goes that a man was saved from being stabbed by using a book as a shield. The book's title was "Noli Me Tangere"(Touch me not) For cheapskates unwilling to shell out money for home gym equipment. Heavy books can be used as weights. I use books to do calves raise exercise. Books as props. Not only as room decor. Men (probably sports jocks) have used books to try to get the attention of intellectually-inclined women. Personally, I think wearing the book on top of his head like a hat would get a chuckle out of me and show he has a sense of humor (I'm attracted to funny people) Other uses...Fly swatter, nutcracker (the hard shell kind not the human variety), emergency toilet paper (people leave paperback novels in the bathroom), insulation material, and to soundproof thin walls (for purpose of preventing the kids from hearing the hanky-panky going on inside the bedroom) There are many more uses for books but this is supposed to be a short post since the average attention span of people has been calculated at 8.25 seconds. Less than a goldfish's 9 seconds. (I'm pretty sure no goldfish is reading this post) Because I have too much idle time, I'm thinking of how to build a mouse trap with books. But for those who are conscientious objectors to animal cruelty, why not build a labyrinth of books? Place some food within the maze, put in some mice, and have hours of fun and amusement. You can even get together with some gambling friends to bet on which mouse gets to the food first. Any thoughts on other off-beat ways of using books? ~This post is for entertainment purposes and the writer should not be taken seriously. *Photo is from the 1941 movie, "Ball of fire" starring Barbara Stanwyck and Gary Cooper

I remember that movie, I liked. You can use the pages of a large book to make a paper hat, or to prepare paper pots to start seeding the vegetables.

@josie_ I use newspapers to make them, but we can also use pages of books we do not like anymore.

Seedling pots are good since they are biodegradable.

For the bar-b-que grill, I hope, and not as a tool of an arsonist.

Book pages could be soaked in water then compressed into balls with your hands. Sundry what you made and when they are thoroughly sun-dried and hard they could be used as fuel similar to charcoal.

I only use books to read or to set a grandchild on so they can see over the table to eat.

Is that not a bit risky? Young children often fidget in their seats. How many books do you need?

These are all good ideas for recycling books. I used phone books to step on a chair to reached the light bulbs in the ceiling

You either have a low ceiling or are taking a risk balancing on a pile of books. With the advent of cell phones, are phone books still in circulation? have not seen one in ages.
