Jack of the Lantern or Jack O'Lantern originated in Ireland. Stingy Jack is the legend of a drunkard who makes a bargain with Satan and made to roam the Earth with only a cutout turnip to light his way. The name also comes from the strange lights reported flickering over the peat bogs which were called will-o'-the-wisps or jack-o-lanterns. These originated as something to ward off evil spirits or guide lost souls and were either set on the window sills or out on the porch after dark. Pumpkins replaced the turnips when Irish immigrants came to North America. Picture is courtesy of Free Stock.

That’s an interesting bit of information. I don’t believe I’d ever thought about it.

@celticeagle I enjoyed it when I was a child and when my kids were little and trick or treaters were going from house to house.

Now, is that Sting-y Jack or Stinge-y Jack? Does he sting or does he hate to share?
