Some Updates...

Once upon a time, there was this soooo soooo wealthy Chinese family whom I told you about in one of my old posts (I tried to search for it, but couldn't find it). The couple owned a number of very successful Chinese grocery stores. Not only that, they also bought a number of investment properties, and owned giant blocks of buildings, apartments etc. They worked so hard and became so rich, but couldn't find the time to go holiday ever (some of their employees were my acquaintances). I wrote at the time about them, and pondered whether it was a good thing to have that much money, owned that many properties, but never could find time to relax or to enjoy the fruit of their labour. Guess what? When they closed the store at my local area as they always did before a Chinese New Year at the end of 2021, we thought nothing of it. Alas, the store has remained closed since, to the concern of all of us. (They always sold cheaper bananas there .) By mid 2022, when that store still closed with a sign 'for sale' - I asked other local traders about that store's owner. Turned out due to Covid19 and all the troubles resulted from that pandemic, the owner got into debt of a few million dollars which they couldn't pay, so the bank put a foreclosure on that store (and that building). Guess now they can go enjoy their holiday with their only child since they have only one store left (which is far away from where I live). Having too many assets can be a problem I think. --- Thought I should give you this update. Would you like to be so wealthy like that couple in the past? How many businesses in your area got into trouble because of the latest Covid pandemic?

A few business closed during Covid and they are not back. In my opinion they would have closed anyway as they were no more competitive with the online stores.

@YrNemo - Two shoes stores closed, they were extremely expensive and now we can order shoes online at a much cheaper price.

Many small cafes in my area were closed, but they would have been closed sooner or later, not because of Covid19 pandemic. (It is just so with those small shops around here.)

The government here helped some of the businesses that weren't allowed to stay open keep their stores/restaurants through the pandemic (and allowed some businesses that weren't "essential" to stay open anyway). Some businesses in my area did go bankrupt, though. You can definitely see what stores had the money to pave the way to remaining open, no matter what they sold.

@YrNemo I love bananas. I buy two or three bunches every two weeks. Sometimes Pretty helps me eat them and sometimes she doesn't.

A pity isn't it. God's way sometimes is weird and so difficult to understand! (but we can argue that God didn't do that Covid thing, it was humans that caused it...)

I keep seeing old shops close down, then a few weeks later, renovations going on, then new shops opening, to be closed down again, on and on...

@nela13 I didn't believe that either, so I went checking with some other traders, they all confirmed so. (Unless they all teased me ?)

The owners must have got money to close their stores at times like that. (Fail that, they do own the store. At my local area, some stores paid $5000 some years ago a month for just the rental.)

I don't like that kind of attitude. Family is so important and we do have time to go out every now and then especially on a special occasions.

Once you have a family business, it becomes a burden I think.

@YrNemo O don't think so. My cousin has a family business and it's a success. They know how to manage it.

@Nakitakona My guess is, one must know the art of delegating in this sort of thing.

Bananas are one of my favorite fruits. I eat them with yogurt and granola. I´m always looking for cheap bananas. I would have become a client of that grocery store if it were close to where I live. Many businesses went bankrupt due to covid here or maybe they migrated to become online businesses.

The closing of that store must be a blessing to some other stores around it. People in my local area now have no choice but to get fruits and veggies from the Aldi close by, or the tiny veggie store a few steps away. Another good thing to us, the car park there used to be so crowded. With that Asian store gone, now we can always find a good spot to park .
