My Portrait of Taz: Underpainting is Finished

My original art

In my last post, I showed you a picture of the beginning of the underpainting and explained what that was (in short, it's a painting done in neutral tones done to establish shapes and shades, and it will eventually be overlain with the true colors). In this picture, the underpainting is finished. As you can see, the picture doesn't look weirdly blobby any more - it looks more like a black-and-white version of what the finished painting might look like. Of course, even though it recaptures Taz's likeness, it doesn't have any kind of realistic texture or detail - it looks kind of like a graphic, or "posterized" version. See, it wouldn't make sense to add detail, as this underpainting will also get completely covered! I know it seems like a lot of work to do for something that will end up covered by another layer of paint, but it is very useful in the process of creating a fully-realized color portrait. Join me next time when I start to add color back in. It will blow your mind!

I couldn't do what you do in any way, shape or form. Kudos to you.

It just takes practice! I've been doing it for decades, and I keep learning things.

@LindaOHio "Natural talent" or not, you're still seeing the results of 50 years of practice. You can't buy a hot dog with "natural talent". :)

@AliCanary You still have to have natural talent. I have none.

It surely is a lot of work, but I know what you mean about a more real portrait. It is coming out beautiful.

It's fascinating to know what goes on behind the scenes.

Yep, there's a lot under the surface. I also do want people to know more about how much work goes into producing a finished piece. Even though it's enjoyable, it's also really hard! Maybe it will help explain why original art is fairly expensive.
