National Serpent Day

United Kingdom
February 1, 2023 3:30am CST
Today is the first day of February and amongst other things it is National Serpents Day. Today we have to give snakes and serpents their due respect where they are used culturally as symbols for different things. I will not be celebrating this today because I have a phobia of snakes. I do not like seeing them in pictures or on the television, I also get nightmares about them too. I have no idea why I do not like them because I have never had a bad experience with one. Some people say they make nice pets and I used to know somebody who had one as a pet. This person used to live in the house next door to me and I was always scared that one day his snake would escape and end up somewhere near me.

That must have been very scary for your dad. Luckily we do not have big snakes in this country but we do get adders which are venomous. However some people here keep big snakes from abroad as pets and sometimes they escape and end up in a public place or another garden.

@lazydaizee i wonder how people keep them as pets . If I have chance to delete this day ,i would do that happily . Here some people even worship snakes as God .They offer milk to them while worshipping . I never dare to go that way .

@Icydoll I would never go near enough to a snake to offer it anything, but I suppose these people worship them as part of their beliefs and culture. I do not know what people see in them as pets because they are not really cute , cuddly , or even good company they just seem to lie there or slither about. Years ago we had a large pet shop in our town and there was a large snake in a tank near the tropical pet area. I went in the pet shop one day and they were cleaning the tank where the snake had been. The person cleaning the tank had put the snake on the floor next to him and people were stood around looking at it. As you can imagine, I got out of the shop as fast as possible that day.

I am very wary of them but I don't have a phobia about them. I know many people do.

@lazydaizee That would spook be out a bit. I think that might be in the everglades where pythons are breeding up in large numbers.

@lazydaizee That's always the worry when an introduced species finds an area to its liking and starts to oust the native creatures.

@JudyEv Yes, I think this programme was made in the everglades. There was something to do with man trying to do something with the area but the project failed and they left it to go to waste. Then these large pythons made their home their and they started to breed very quickly. The authorities are worried that these snake will overrun the area and put other wildlife in danger.

Seeing a snake will send shivers down my spine, family and friends who are not scared of snakes always find me funny.

My partner has a snake phobia too. I have to remember because the rest of us have no problems. Some friends have pet snakes and also, very occasionally, we see grass snakes in the garden.
