* I wonder if the green dye has any harmful chemicals as the red variety does. The Windy City(Chicago)actually pours green dye into the Chicago River. The first time was in 1962. This also takes place in Savannah, Georgia. * 13 million pints of Guinness are consumed worldwide on St. Patrick's Day. If that's the case, how much other beers and alcohol are consumed? * There are about 33.1 million Americans who say they have Irish blood. (About 333 million people live in America) * It is believed that Saint Patrick's name at birth was Maewyn Succat. * The traditional occupation of a leprechaun is that of a shoemaker. Leprechauns use their "shillelaghs" to access their rainbow. * The full significance of St. Patrick's Day is that it commemorates the introduction of Christianity to Ireland.

St. Patrick's Day is almost ignored in Ireland, not at all celebrated in Europe, but it's a very big think in the United States.

@BarBaraPrz I have this feeling, a crazy celebration considering that not even the 10% of the population is of Irish origin.

Here's another fact which might surprise you. We Scots seem to celebrate St Patrick's day more than that of the day of our own Patron Saint .

I think all dyes can have negative effects from what I remember reading but red is worse than others. My daughter was allergic to certain red dyes I think it was red40. My husband loves guiness and buys it once in awhile especially for Saint Patrick’s day. I have Irish ancestry. Maewyn that’s an interesting name. I was reading the baby a Saint Patrick’s day book about leprechauns two nights ago and didn’t know how to pronounce shillelagh or Celtic my husband corrected me.

I hope it's not harmful or it would harm the plants and fish in the river. I am Irish. My mother was half Irish and half French. I knew the significance of St. Patrick's Day.

I have been wearing green all week. Of Course I will be wearing green Friday. I also will be drinking Irish Breakfast tea to celebrate. When Chris moved down here, he had drank some Guinness one St. Patrick's Day. I don't know if he will this year.
