How old are your devices and gadgets

I hate wasting money on devices and gadgets. One of my family friends has a habit of changing the things every second year, be it a car, TV, cell phone, home appliances. He says the longer you hold on to them, lesser is their value and functionality. I feel he wastes more of his life trying to look for a new product to replace the old one. In any event the biggest drop in value comes within the year. My cell phone is 7 years old. My AC's - 3 nos...20 years old. My refrigerator ..1 number... 20 years old. My Washing machine - 20 years old. My microwave ... 20 years old. My desktop - 23 years old. The 20 years old appliances are LG products. This is not an advertisement or sales promotion. I have had minor hiccups now and then. But they are all functional. I feel proud I am able to use them for so long. Most of the people discard their cell phones within 5 years. I make it a point to use mine for 10 years if not more. How long do you all use your gadgets, devices, appliances, whatever you all call them?

My celephone was 2years old,to be honest,i planed replace it with a new.Every gadget had finite lifetime, when it get to end of life,we'd better dispose of it.however,i don't like frequently replacing old one, because it will cost more money to buy a new one.if the old one can function and within lifetime, for sure we can keep using it.

I am not sure what is finite lifetime. I had an old car, and I often used to feel that I could talk to it. I am developing similar sentiment with this new car which is again 6 years old. LOL

I am against changing appliances that works. I had to change my 9 years old cellphone because the 2G network was abandoned, I had to buy a 4G. The washing machine gave up last year (it was 23 years old). The refrigerator is 19 years old, I donated the microwave because I hate it. My desktop computer is 12 years old, but I take out obsolete parts and replace to keep it updated.

@vandana7 - If it works why to change? My husband bought three new computers during the time I am using my old one.

@LadyDuck I too like to change only if stops working. Though in my case, it does stop working in 6-7 years. I am lately unable to book cabs as my app won't work till I update it, and my phone doesn't like updating anything anymore. Complains about space, with only handful apps remaining there.

I bought my crystal radio set 1919 and it's all I need. This TV fad isn't going to last long. I did upgrade the crystal radio in 1994 so it would run the Internet and that was a waste of money because this computer fad is going to end any day now.

@vandana7 I would never laugh at you. I'd rather cut out my own tongue than laugh at you. I just think you spend too lavishly on modern gadgets, that's all.

But trucks at your end are of very good quality and expensive too. We get a car for less than 8500 USD.

I use my gadgets, devices, and appliances for as long as they are functioning. No sense in getting a new one when the current one is still in working condition.

@vandana7 true. Case in point, my computer monitor started acting up. I asked several technicians if it can still be repaired. the first two said to discard it already and buy a new one. I went to a third technician that said it can still be fixed. Good thing I asked around.

That is what. When we buy a device, we decide why. If it is still giving that benefit, then why should we discard it?

@aninditasen I am fine with changing cell phone every 10 years. The reason is, new software and features would be around. Being up to date becomes later on in life..so keeping pace somewhat is good idea. I still have 3 years to hold on to this device. It has served me well. It would be difficult to let go. Vehicles... they are write offs anyway....by then. If they are still functional why not. I am sure I will continue to use this car till I get decent EV in the market within my budget. I was planning it around 75 should I survive.

My cell phone is and chromebook is 4 years old. I am looking into getting another computer though preferably a Macbook. I use my gadgets until I can't use them anymore. It's a bad idea to buy things when they first come out because many times they haven't worked out all the issues yet. So, I never purchase gadgets as soon as they come out.

We always keep our appliances, etc. until they are no longer usable. The only thing that gets replaced more often is my laptop. After about 5-7 years it no longer functions well. Hope you are having a good weekend.

Yes, weekend is great. You were missing and Eva told us that it was your computer. :) Our laptop for some strange reason is working beyond 10 years. LOL I will take that with both my hands. Washing machine does trouble every now and then, but I have become a master in getting those scales removed by using some liquid. If it troubles, I try that and it starts working once more. :)

@vandana7 I'm glad you're having a great weekend. Our washer is making noises that sound like the belt slipping. The washer and dryer are about 18 years old. They are Whirlpool.

i dont like changes my gadget to follow the trend. i buy a gadget based on the function. if my gadget start slowly, maybe i consider to buy a new. just that reason i will change my gadget.

Funny isn't it? We look for new features...sometimes our old devices can be useful with little bit of tweaking to the software ...software updates...but we don't realize that our existing devices are good enough for those features.

That is how it should be use it till it can no longer be used. Then not only we get the latest features in the new one, but also make the most of the machine. I bought this washing machine for 17000 in 2002. 20 years x 12 months...240 months. 17000/240 = that is roughly 71 rupees per month for washing my clothes apart from power and soaps. Which househelp would charge as little as that then and now for washing clothes?
