Have you heard of the ‘Titanic village’? This is the name sometimes used for the village of Lahardane (meaning ‘half on hill’) which is in the parish of Addergoole, county Mayo, Ireland. We had a scenic drive around Lough Conn on the way there with Nephin mountain looming over us as we drew nearer. On April 10, 1912, fourteen individuals from Addergoole parish set out on the first leg of their journey to join the ill-fated Titanic. They travelled by horse-drawn trap and sidecar to the railway station at Castlebar and then had a nine-hour journey ahead of them through Limerick and Cork to the port of Queenstown (now Cobh). Only three of the fourteen travellers survived the sinking. Being a small parish, this was a devastating event. By coincidence, we were at the memorial on April 10, 2023 so 111 years later.

It was indeed. Many of the people shared surnames and I guess all were known to each other.

@Adie04 I'm not sure when the memorials were erected. Perhaps they eased the pain a little.

I hadn't heard about it before either. It must have been devastating for the families when they learnt of the sinking.

@JudyEv Yeah.... makes me wonder if this is worth to build, for the sake of the families of the deceased in the Titanic?

That is a big coincidence that you were there at the Titanic Village 111 years later. I never heard of the Titanic Village but it was interesting to read your post. Hopefully some day I'll be able to visit Ireland.

Proportionately, it was probably the most people lost from the one area.

@JudyEv love the Irish English accent! One of my favorite James Bond actors, Pierce Brosnan is Irish

It is pronounced 'lock con'. All the signs here are in English and Irish. There is no way you could guess the Irish meanings and the pronunciations are very weird too.

@JudyEv I think the Star Company was the owner of the Titanic. But, don't trust my memory about much. Anne

That's pretty interesting!! I came to know of the Parish, the areas as well as the story about the individuals. It would indeed have been a tragic event for this Parish. Nice share !
