No change for me.

United Kingdom

Yesterday I went shopping in my normal supermarket. The person serving me was being very friendly and polite, but she was so busy chatting that she forgot to give me my change. When I asked her about my change, she had to get her manager to get a code so that she could open the till. Then they had problems with that and the whole thing took about ten minutes to open. I can remember years ago when I worked in a shop , all I had to do was press a button and I could open the till straight away. So much for new technology saving us time.

When I worked with a cash register, there was a button on the bottom of the drawer that would open the till.

That was like the one I used. It was much easier then, but this was back in the 1990`s, so I suppose lots of things have changed since then. Nowadays modern tills look more like computers than the old style cash registers.

@lazydaizee Yes, that's true. Even the Walmart stores here have the new computer registers now. We noticed that a couple of months ago.

@DaddyEvil I suppose they use these because it is easier for the cashiers to scan a bar code rather than doing it the old way . That is until something goes wrong with the bar code then they have to type all those numbers in by hand which takes even longer.

This happens time and time again with modern technology. It's probably time-saving when it's working properly but much of the time it doesn't.

It does seem to go wrong rather a lot these days. To make things worse, I went into another shop afterwards and they could not get their equipment working at all. It was just one of those days.

New technology supposed to be user friendly but I think they have considered some control there. In order to prevent the cashier to simply have unrecorded punch or punch out

The lady on the till said it would be better if they wrote the code down somewhere so that she could see it. But I suppose this would be difficult because of security and they have to keep the code hidden.

@lazydaizee Yes and she must memorize the code

@m_audrey6788 That would be a better idea, training the staff to memorize the codes. Unless she was forgetful, like me, I am always forgetting things like passwords and other codes.

It is beyond me why she couldn't open the till without getting a code from her manager.

@lazydaizee Maybe that is the case.

Perhaps they do not allow staff to have the code for some reason.

@changjiangzhibin89 Perhaps it is different in other shops where there is a smaller staff and the managers can keep an eye on things more.

Now it is a pain when they have to open the till. I often propose to buy an additional little thing, so they can scan the item, I pay and the till opens.

@lazydaizee The first time something like that happened I also waited 10 minutes for the manager. When it happened again, I bought something to avoid waiting.

You are a very helpful customer, I did not think of doing that but I will if I have that trouble again.

Couldn't she just wait until the next customer paid and then the till would be open? That's what they usually do here in such situations.

There was not anybody in the queue behind me and the shop was not busy, so that may have taken even longer.

Do they not trust the cashier anymore?

That is what I was thinking. Perhaps they have had trouble with staff in the past.

I think I distracted her by talking too much.

That's what I see nowadays in the supermarket there is one person who has the password of the code to every till . I think it's about curbing theft
