This time next week we’ll be in May, and in the 1973 songs! Don’t forget, I’m not trying to make you feel old (that’s arthritis’s job ); rather, I’m pointing how just how darn good these songs are. So with that in mind let’s go back 60 years to another great tune. #7: Another Saturday Night - Sam Cooke Well, here’s something interesting: Picky Wedia says that Cooke wrote this while on tour in London. He was staying at a hotel that was for men only. What I can’t find is if that was a YMCA-type hotel or if it was racially segregated and all he could find. Anyway, he couldn’t find “some chick to talk to” because it was men-only lodging! (I found an article from National Geographic about women-only hotels in the early 20th century, so apparently the Holiday Inns of the day didn’t want any hanky panky going on like you’d find in a brothel.) Well, I never!!! (Funny thing, the gender-segregation lodging is making a comeback for various reasons.) Anyway, Cooke’s lament of being alone in London with a fat paycheck from a gig turned into a great song. Despite the 60s lingo (“a cat named Frankenstein,” “I’m gonna have to blow this town”) it has a following today, thanks to notable covers by Cat Stevens and Jimmy Buffett. This remains one of Cooke’s best-known songs. Another Saturday Night Written by Sam Cooke Recorded by Sam Cooke Released as a single, 1963 If I could meet ‘em I could get ‘em:

That is on my oldies playlist and l always wondered why he couldn't find someone - he was goodlooking. Perhaps he was very choosy.

Well, if they wouldn’t let women in the hotel he was staying at, what was the purpose?

I once told Alexa to play me a random song, and it played a Sam Cooke hit.

Good for Alexa! I could go with “Cupid” or “You Send Me” or so many other Sam Cooke greats.

Definitely a great song. Has a slight “reggae” vibe to it, before reggae got popular!

The covers can't hold a candle to the original. They just don't have the same spirit as Sam's version.

I’ve found that true of a lot of covers, especially of R&B songs by Caucasians (looking at you, James Taylor ).
