Day 305 (Proverbs 31:10-31) Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies. The heart of her husband safely trusts her; so he will have no lack of gain. She does him good and not evil all the days of her life. She seeks wool and flax and willingly works with her hands. She is like a merchant ship; she brings her food from afar. She also rises while it is yet night, and provides food for her household, and a portion for her maidservants. She considers a field and buys it; from her profits, she plants a vineyard. She girds herself with strength and strengthens her arms. She perceives that her merchandise is good, and her lamp does not go out at night. She stretches out her hands to the distaff, and her hand holds the spindle. She extends her hand to the poor, yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of snow for her household, for all her household is clothed with scarlet. She makes tapestry for herself; her clothing is fine linen and purple. Her husband is known in the gates when he sits among the elders of the land. She makes linen garments and sells them and supplies sashes for the merchants. Strength and honor are her clothing; she will rejoice in time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness. She watches over the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise and call her blessed; her husband also praises her: “Many daughters have done well, but you excel them all.” Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the LORD will be praised. Give her the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates. Women, do you feel special? Husbands, how do you treat your wives and the mother of your children? Do they know you love them? Do your children know you love their mother? Do you honor your marriage vows when you said you would love her all the days of your life together? You might call Solomon the love expert as he had 300 wives and 700 concubines. Yet it was his mother who told him what to look for in a wife. How many women can live up to Solomon’s mother’s expectations as a wife and mother? Can you? As Christian wives and mothers, you want your husband’s love. You want your children’s love. You want to have safety in your home. However, did you read what Solomon’s mother said a wife should be? She should take care of her household, her children, and her husband. She should take care of her servants. She should be a woman of industry. She should bring honor to her husband and children so that they cannot say anything bad about her but praise her for all she does for them. It is easy for wives to quote the Scripture about how men are to treat their wives, yet do you deserve such treatment? (Ephesians 5:25-33) Husbands love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. So, husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. For we are members of His body, of His flesh, and of His bones. “For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless, let each one of you love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. Wives, do you respect your husbands? Do you deserve his praise or your children’s praise? When you heed Solomon’s mother’s admonition to take care of your household and not let your feet wander, your husband and children will love you. They will bless you, and you will know their love by the respect they give you. Let’s pray: Father, let me be a wife and mother who loves and respects her husband and children. Let my husband and children know my love for them. Help me not to become idle but be a woman of integrity. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
