beautiful eggs

Our chickens have finally gotten old enough to lay eggs for us and they are so beautiful! We have had chickens a few times. They have been wiped out a few times, once by stray dogs, once by some kind of local wild life and again a stray dog. I vowed to not do it again after the last time, but eggs got so expensive and when our family eats eggs, we go through an 18 count in one sitting. So, we reinforced our coop, made a chicken tractor and are trying again. Keeping my fingers crossed it all works out. The bad part is when somebody's dog breaks in and kills all my chickens, there's nothing anybody can do, I'm just outta luck Chuck!

I hope the reinforcement works and you don't lose any more chickens.

thank you, it is working out well. I am down to buying an 18 count a week and the hens are doing the rest. we usually buy one of the 60 count boxes weekly, so that is an improvement.

@mom210 I used to buy the 60 count boxes, but they got very expensive. Now, I buy them by the dozen. I still keep five or six dozen in the fridge at a time. It's good your hens are taking up the slack.

Hopefully your poor chickens will be safe this time. It's nice being able to eat your own eggs.

I hope nothing destroyed them this round. (You may want to edit a sentence. It reads eggs eggs instead of eats eggs).

It's good to see you post a discussion again! I really hope your chicken coop survives this time around. I can't imagine your frustration when you do everything you're supposed to do, but other people don't take care of their responsibilities. I guess no one really has jurisdiction on wildlife though. I'll be rooting for the safety of your chickens, and the wild success of the egg laying!

Lucky you, fresh eggs from your hens are surely the best. Is there nothing you can do to avoid that dogs break in?

You need to get your yard fenced in and shut those chickens inside a coop, at night.

@kobesbuddy probbaly a raccoon, they like to grab those little heads I think a opossum will do it too. We have had that happen before too. We reinforced our pen, it has double wire, keeping our fingers crossed

@mom210 My daughter decided to raise chickens. They were so cute and friendly! The neighbor dogs came in the yard and killed most of them. Two ran away, and something got them inside their coop. The animal beheaded them!

Best of luck with this flock of chickens! I wish we could raise some ourselves, but there are a ton of hawks around here and I know our dog would dig under the fence to get to the coop.

One of my cousins recently lost several to a raccoon. But now the raccoon has gone to it's just reward. I hope you can keep the dogs away. I know it's difficult.

I am often surprised at the intelligence of those animals, they are quite clever little guys. It's those little fingers they have too, they work very well at getting into places

@mom210 Raccoons are very determined animals. If they want to get into something we don't want them into, they generally find a way to get it accomplished.
