Day 313 (Ecclesiastes 8:14-17) Vanity occurs on earth, and just men to whom it happens according to the work of the wicked. Again, there are wicked men to whom it happens according to the work of the righteous. I said this also is vanity. So, I commended enjoyment because a man has nothing better under the sun than to eat, drink, and be merry; for this will remain with him in his labor throughout his life which God gives him under the sun. When I applied my heart to know wisdom and see the business done on earth, even though one sees no sleep day or night, I saw that a man cannot find all of God’s work under the sun. For though a man labors to discover it, he will not find it. Moreover, though a wise man attempts to know it, he is unable to find it. Have you searched for something and given up because you couldn’t find it? What did you conclude when you couldn’t find what you were looking for? Solomon made conclusions about the vanity of men. He said the enjoyment of man was to eat, drink, and be merry because it is the one constant throughout man’s life. He also said that no matter how hard he looked, he would never find out everything God did on earth. As Christians, you know you can read the Bible from cover to cover and never know everything in it, but you will always see something you never saw before. Is that vanity? No. You increase knowledge when you spend time in God’s Word. You can search out God’s will for your life, and never come to the end of searching. Is that vanity? No. Solomon said life was vanity because everything a person does; he will need to do again. In all his searching, he would never find the answers he was looking for. When people look for answers among the things they do every day, they will never find the answers. But when they look for answers from God through His Word, they will find them. Life is more than eating, drinking, and making merry. It is searching for the things of God through His Word so you can know His will for your life. It might seem like vanity, but it will bring enjoyment because you are learning about God. You will never learn everything about God, but you will always learn something new about Him. Let’s pray: Father, give me the wisdom to search out knowledge about You. Let me see something new every time I open Your Word. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen. I've done the same. Then I give it over to God and the answer is always there. Have a blessed day.
