Lack of Planning on YOUR Part...

...should not be an emergency on MINE. Yet yesterday our landlord started blowing up our phones at about 11:30 AM. My phone was in my purse in the break room so I was oblivious to it until my husband came storming into where I was busily melting my brain with e-learnings and told me he needed me to come with him right now. So we went and called the landlord back, and SURPRISE! There's work being done on our building's foundation, and they need access to our garage to do it! But it's okay if we aren't available, the super can just take the key and let the foundation guys in. Which yes, that would typically be a viable option... if our garage wasn't packed full of stuff that needed to move before they can do anything in there. So I left work an hour and a half early and then spent the rest of the afternoon loading stuff into my car and taking it over to a storage unit. We still have to find a place for the chest freezer to go, but the garage is mostly clear now. I'm hoping to catch the foundation guys when they get here in a couple hours so we can clarify exactly what needs to be done; the worker I spoke to yesterday said they're digging two 3' x 3' holes inside and three more out in our fenced yard. That lines up with the blueprint that was texted to us, but he indicated the ones inside would be in different spots than the ones that were marked on the blueprint. There's also a bit of a discrepancy because the super thinks one of them is supposed to go exactly where our water heater currently is, but based on where it's marked on the blueprint it looks like it should be in the little attached storage unit behind the garage instead. It sounds like they're going to be injecting foam under the concrete pad from inside our unit, too... and if the highlighted spots on the blueprint are accurate, every spot they're applying it corresponds exactly to where our reptile enclosures are. At least the timing for springing this on us is better than it could be... all I'm doing is e-learnings that are a kind of work-at-your-own-pace thing, and it's a slow week for the installers so my husband had no issue putting the jobs he had for today onto someone else's board and taking the day off to deal with the stuff at home. And while my landlord is typically great and I'm sure that this is just the result of an accidental miscommunication, the petty part of me is really cackling over the fact that the super who was supposed to notify us is also having to clear his garage out for this.

I would really hate it if that happened to me.

I hated it so much while we were in the thick of moving things, but now that the majority of the moving is done I'm really happy with all the progress. We basically have a blank slate so we can just pare down a lot of the clutter without having to bring it back here.

What a terrible pain in the rear that all is, so much work. At least you have a positive attitude about it all, that's good. Because they are insisting your garage be empty, I think they might have to be liable to pay for your storage unit. Just a thought...

Technically they probably are, especially with no advance notice... but we're sitting around 40% below current market rent on this unit. They're listing the next unit here that becomes available for $1,500 or $1,600 a month. They've only increased our rent once since we moved in over six years ago and it was only $50, so I'm not going to whine about a hundred bucks spent on a storage unit to them.

@yukimori I understand that. I've lived in the same place for quite some time, the rent has gone up some but not nearly as much as it could have, I have researched my area and for the nice place that I live, I feel fortunate.

Oh, good lord. It reminds me of the time maintenance came knocking on everyone’s apartment doors at 6am, asking us to move our cars so the parking lot could be repaved. They couldn’t have left us a note at least the day before? Even so, that’s nothing compared to having to load all of your stuff from your garage, and having to move it. And, quite frankly, I appreciate that petty part of you that you shared with us.

Oh, yeah. it was a ton of work. I'm really happy with how it looks now, though! We have a nice blank slate to start fresh with and if we're intentional about what we bring back from storage it will be waaaaay less work when we're finally ready to actually move out of here. We ended up having to take almost everything out of the entire first floor for the foam injection, too... then we found out they aren't coming in to do that until sometime next week.

I'm sure you've told me but why are they digging the holes? I've forgotten.

They were installing piers underneath the building's foundation. Once the piers were in place, they actually physically jacked the building up several inches to make it level again.

@yukimori That sounds pretty complicated - and a mite dangerous but I guess they know what they're doing.

Depending on how much you like your super, you may be able to negotiate reduced rent based on losing access to a portion of your garage. But if everything is good (with the exception of a lack of planning) then why create waves. But don't rely on my opinion because I'm not an attorney so ......
