Have you fainted out of fear?

Craig's grandfather was diagnosed with gal bladder and prostate cancer. It's in a very progressive stage. He had two surgeries last month. In his second surgery, we had to look for blood because the blood bank ran out of type O. So, we decided to donate our blood. Craig's dad was the first one to do it. His uncle got disqualified. We needed one more bag so there was Craig. I was with him during the interview process as I know more of his medical history than he does. When he was told to go into the physical exam room, I requested if I could go with him because I know my son very well. When it comes to needle and blood, he's not the bravest one. So we went to the examination room, got his fingers pricked for more tests and while waiting for another test, I asked him if he was still ok to go through the process. He said he was fine. He entered a very tiny cubicle so I stayed out. After a few minutes, a woman called me and told me they couldn't go through with the process. In a very soft voice she said, "Your son isn't feeling well. He fainted." I just smiled at her and said, "He got scared. I'm sorry." He tried his best to give blood for his grandpa, but well, his fear got the best of him. I still admire him for trying. We went to a restaurant after that and ate his favorite pizza. We talked about what happened and just laughed about it. He wasn't embarrassed at all. He even messaged his girlfriend and all his friends what happened to him.

Mee too, I am not good dealing with blood and needle but the older I get I can handle it, but I can only deal with it for blood test not for blood donations.

Yeah, Craig is the same. His ok with blood tests but to donate a blood and seeing a very huge needle made him really too scared.

He's terminally ill and is given not even a month to live. Stage 9-10 cancer. A very progressive one.

I am sorry he couldn’t go through with it. I’ve had blood drawn so often starting as a child that it never bothered me except for the first time and second time. But most young ones get very nervous, and also a lot of older people! It was sweet of him to give it a go, and I am glad you made him feel better about it. I’ve only ever fainted because of low blood pressure, but never from fear.

@toniganzon Dengue fever?! The poor boy! So many things he's had to go through. You must be proud of his resilience.

@AmbiePam Yes, a very strong one. But he just couldn't stand donating blood even if he wanted to.

Craig has had his blood drawn too many times since he was a baby as well. He had kawazaki disease, he had dengue fever, he even had a surgery because of a ruptured AP which almost cost his life. But that didn't make him get over his fear of needles and blood.

No, I've never had that happen and I've given blood lots of times. At least he has a good story to tell people now.

Oh yes and each time, he would laugh as well. One of his friends even told him he had the impression that Craig was a really courage man lol! He never imagined Craig would faint for trying to donate blood.

@DaddyEvil Yes he is. When we told his grandfather about that, we got scolded. He said we should have never asked the boy to do it. But we told him, we didn't. Craig volunteered.

I can understand. My son is very much willing to do so. He said he never imagined he would faint. But he did. So I guess, he will never do it again.

Poor boy, I understand, I am not very good with blood and needles either. I am very sorry for his grandfather, being a 0 group blood is a problem, there are not many donors.

It's quite strange actually because type O is the most common blood type in my country. It rarely goes out of stock. Type AB is the rarest one.

@toniganzon O Negative is the less common here, O positive is a lot more common. O positive can receive from A, B and AB. O Negative only from another O negative and only 7% of the world population is O negative. I am unlucky, I am O negative, universal donor but I can only take from another O negative.

@aninditasen That one we don't often hear in our hospital. The private hospitals at least. I haven't really been to a government hospital.

That's a shame. When I have to have blood drawn I look away as I can't stand to see the needle.

Don't be sorry. WE laugh about it and my son never fails to laugh about it too no matter how many times we tell the story to other people.
