Ender's Game

I have read Ender's Game a few times. I had not seen the movie. Now, it wasn't because I didn't want to see the movie, it was because when it came out, I was really broke. I guess I could've done it, but I knew I was going to stop working in November when I turned 60 so I was trying to not spend too much money. Besides, we were planning on a big party for my 60th. Not just because I was turning 60, but because Doctor Who was turning 50. The show... I also knew I had a few objections to the movie. Why? I had read the book. Now, Ford did a good job of playing Graff, except... well... Graff was obese, very obese. Also, they condensed the book into about a month where the book took years. Also, they had Bean on the transport ship with Ender and he came later. He was also, probably the smartest kid on the training ship once he got there, but you had to read the book to know why. Even more so if you read Ender's Shadow. Then they crammed the whole second book into the ending. I didn't know that until I watched the movie, but they did. I don't hate it, but... So, did you see Ender's Game? Have you read the book (it won the Hugo)? What did you think?

well, I know you aren't a big SF fan, so I can't say I blame you for not reading or watching it.

@ElicBxn I loved X-Files and Supernatural, but I've really just not watched any scripted program in quite awhile. I do remember Ender's Game coming out, and people didn't like how the movie matched up with the book. I like to read reviews even if I don't watch the movie. My brother-in-law loves Dr. Who.

@AmbiePam I have loved Doctor Who since 1982. Connie and I started a Doctor Who club back then. BBC did a big thing on the 10th anniversary (The Three Doctors) but there wasn't the big deal with Doctor Who on the 20th anniversary so much. In 1988 they did do a big deal, and we were at the PBS studio answering phones. In 2013 they did a simulcast world wide of the 50th anniversary. Part of why Doctor Who is a big deal, well, it is also my birthday. But I got into science fiction since I saw Tomorrow is Yesterday in the 1960s.

I love the book. I didn't hate the movie, I had issues, but didn't hate it. And don't say I read the book because of the movie - no, I read the book shortly after it came out. I had already discovered Card, the writer of the book from a previous book he had written.

@BabeSays They hit the high points in the movie, but condensed it - a lot! What had happened in several years at Battle School was all condensed to a month, actually a little less.

@ElicBxn Honestly Books are way better than movies. Since the movies always change things. I'm a huge fan of the Harry Potter movies but I heard there were many characters that were not included in the movie. And that book was much more intense and enjoyable. I read The maze runner and watched the movie. Indeed I loved the book a lot more. In the movie there were a changes that were made and it kinda disturbed me since it didn't match what I read.

I don't think I've heard of it, certainly not seen the movie. Who wrote the book?

I read the series but never watched the movie. I usually won't watch a movie if I've read the book already. The movies never do justice to the books, in my opinion.

It was better than I expected. I think I covered most of the cons of the adaption. The 'game' with was pretty much what was in the book. There were a lot of things skipped because of condensing things in the movie, but as much as I went in expecting to hate it, I didn't.

No, I haven’t read the book or seen the movie. Who was the author?

The book was written by Orson Scott Card and he had a hand in the movie as well. I really think it was presented more as a Harrison Ford vehicle, but it wasn't.

@RubyHawk isn't that the truth. There were a lot of things they did take from the books, just compressed them.

@ElicBxn The book is always better than the movie. Every book I’ve read and then seen the movie has been that way.

I read the book a few years ago, and I thought it was pretty good. I haven't seen the film yet (like you, I was financially embarrassed when it came out). I don't like the sound of them cramming the second book into the end of the film. Glad I haven't seen it yet, because I've yet to read the second book. I wouldn't want any spoilers.

It would spoil the end... sort of. But it also isn't the same. If you watch the movie up to the point where Ender is talking to Petra on the planet after they win - I think - you would be safe. In the book they don't go to the planet until the second book because the ansibles (am I spelling that right?) don't have a limitation. And the books are set 'real' time so there is no 'warp' drive or anything.
