Tornadoes and Socks and Stuff

Wow. I’ve been watching tornadoes go through Chicago this evening. The live camera from the Sears Tower (I think it’s “officially” the Willis Tower now, but it’s been the Sears Tower as long as I can remember) was unreal, with the wall cloud below the camera on the 110th floor. I’m waiting to hear from all of my Chicago-area friends. The news reports are reporting one minor injury thus far, and most of the damage doesn’t look like that EF-4 “neighborhood flattened” type that you see in major news reports. So what does the photo have to do with any of that? Nothing, really. That’s the self-tour marker on the USS Yorktown. That’s so cute! I wish they’d had a t-shirt with that on it when I was there (it’s in Charleston Harbor, near Fort Sumter). That, however, means that travel is hopefully near. God willing, after I recover from the procedure next week, I’ll be heading out. Where? Depends on the weather, of course, but I’d like to go through Ohio. One of the things I’ve done in preparation is the dirty L word. Yes, laundry. I bought some new socks, and I washed them this evening, so they’re hanging in the back, drying. Y’all have a great evening!

It was very windy late afternoon in St Catharines yesterday, and rained overnight, then a bit more about 9 this morning but we left about 11 am for Hamilton, where we didn't encounter any more rain. Saw some interesting clouds, though.

@FourWalls These weren't storm clouds... more like little sheeplets skipping across the sky.

Storm clouds can be amazing. I love to watch distant lightning in the evening, when it lights up the clouds dozens of miles/kilometers away.

Tornadoes seem to be popping up frequently lately. Tornadoes scare the heck out of me.

They’re vicious storms, that’s for certain! I think we all grew up with a fear of them, thanks to The Wizard of Oz.

@FourWalls we never got tornado warnings here until the last year or two.

I freaking hate this time of year, certainly for the heat, but mostly because of the tornado threats. Your picture is pretty cute!

@FourWalls For us, it is April through August, although we had one touch down in December 2022. It caused a lot of damage, and sadly, one life. But a December tornado is really rare, even for Tornado Alley.

We’re usually done with tornado season by now. I guess the El Niño is messing things up. The two Super Outbreaks in my lifetime have both been El Niño years (1974 and 2011).

So much wild and wooly weather this year. Flooding, tornadoes, hail, hot weather, drought. Enjoy your day. Where will you go in Ohio?

Your back yard sounds great! All depends on the weather, but our tournament is in Newark. Maybe I can see Eva at the auction, too!

I'm just waiting to see how bad the storms predicted for my area get tonight. Hopefully not tornados but thunderstorms with hail can be bad enough, especially with high winds added in. (I'll need to go out in a while and roll the back windows up that half inch I leave them down so the car interior can "breathe" during the Summer.) I hope you don't see any storms unless it's by proxy. Have a good night.

@FourWalls I both hope that's right and wrong. I want it to be a while before you have to worry but don't want you to see anything severe, at the same time.

I sure hope everyone in Chicago is all right, I wonder if anyone wound up in Muchikinland, Tornadeos are something I never want to see I get enough anxiety from hurricane time over here,

I love Florida, but I’d only live in the panhandle, so in case they said “invest 92-L” (or whatever, the “92-L” indicates the latitude of the investigation [invest]) my butt could be in Milwaukee by the end of the day.

@FourWalls Every part of the country has threats--wildfires, earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. I'll take the hurricanes. We have many days of warning in advance to prepare. Didn't work so great for Sandy but the NWS has changed their warning criteria.

Yes, I was quite content to watch them from online cameras about 300 miles away from where they were happening. One had a rainbow behind it! That was amazing.
