White Nectarines - New for Me. Are They Good?

I'm not the biggest fan of grocery shopping, but I do like going to the store more in the summertime, as there are some wonderful seasonal fruits available. I always stock up on nectarines and plums, and I get particularly tickled if I can find my favorite, the pluot (sometimes called the plumcot), a hybrid mix of plum and apricot that has a sweet, mild taste. This time, I bought some black plums (sweeter and with less bitter skin than the red plums) and some nectarines. Nectarines are described as "hairless peaches", although I think "bald peaches" or "nekkid peaches" would be funnier. To my mind, they don't really taste like peaches, though. I selected some nice, ripe ones--not mushy, but soft to the touch--and I was looking forward to how sweet and juicy they would be. Sometimes nectarines sold in the store can still be very hard, and they are somewhat tasteless in such a state. I got home and had one of the nectarines, and I was disappointed to discover that I had accidentally purchased the white-flesh nectarines instead of the yellow-flesh kind. I had never had a white-flesh nectarine before; I have avoided buying them because I suspected they wouldn't be as sweet or as flavorful, and I was right--wow, it was extremely juicy, but it hardly had any taste! Why would they even sell these, I wondered? I got my answer today. I wanted another piece of fruit, so I tried another of the nectarines. To my surprise and delight, this one was delicious! So apparently white-flesh nectarines CAN be quite yummy, but if it's going to be hit-or-miss, I think I'll stick with the yellow ones. I still have two more fruits from this purchase, so I guess I'll make my firm decision after I'm done with those.

I like both the yellow and the white nectarines. I also love to see the seasonal fruit arrive at the grocery store as well as some "specialty" fruit that is shipped in from other places. I like to try different-for-me fruit. (Some of them I don't like but I don't have to buy them. *shrug*)

Yeah, it's worth trying (except for durian, maybe)!

@AliCanary I'd love to try durian, too. But it's illegal to ship it to the US.

@DaddyEvil Ha ha! I guess I'm safe, then. I think the most exotic thing I've had is star fruit. I liked it pretty well. It's kind of expensive, though!

Unfortunately, I tend to get a lot of hot or miss with my fruit. Whether it be a white or yellow nectarine, or a big watermelon, some pieces of fruit are just disappointing. It’s such a bummer though, isn’t it.

Oh, yes! Watermelon really is like that - it can be so sweet, but sometimes it's just more water than melon!

I don't think they are nearly as common - I don't remember ever seeing them growing up.

We have both the yellow and white nectarines here, same as white and yellow peaches. I like more the yellow for both, but the white are good too.

It's good to see you again. I haven't had a nectarine in decades. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

They sell these here too but I couldn't really comment on how consistent the flavour is. We don't often buy them.
