My date with Dollar General

New one on me happened yesterday. I headed out, grocery list in hand. I decided to go to the Dollar General, check out their prices and then go to the grocery store. I never made it to the grocery store!! Some of D G's prices were cheaper than the grocery store or matched the grocery store's prices. A few were higher. I even found a loaf of pretty good bread. End of summer sale that I had to snag: plastic square garden planters. Buy one- get one free. SNAG. I dodged the Halloween candy corn bags though I did buy a bag of chips and okay lemon sandwich cookies. Hubby wanted almonds for the almond butter cookies. I found a bag of salted and roasted almonds. I didn't like the salted part but the price was pretty good. We just made sure to not add salt to the cooky recipe like it called for. Today I need to walk around and think where those planters will go. I also have old rotten apples to put in the planters. That will help fill them so that I don't need to put as much store dirt in.

@rebelann That would be fun. I already have walnut seedlings that I need to pull from planters.

One day you'll make apple walnut pies or cakes from homegrown trees. Yummmmm

@rebelann That does sound good. I wish I knew what to do with the apples from one of my trees. The apples are bitter so we don't eat them. Huge amount of wasting there.

We have a Dollar Tree about a mile down State in one direction and a Family Dollar about two blocks down State in the other direction. My daughter loves to visit them. (State Street is the major street out here) Prices are getting so out of hand nowadays. I was hoping they would come down a bit after the COVID and transport stuff got straightened out. Lemon sandwich cookies sound good.

@celticeagle Ha ha. I admit that I just ordered a hand held small vacuum cleaner. The wheat grinder throws flour all over the walls. I wonder if the cleaner gizmo will clean those awful window tracks?

@celticeagle Lemon sandwich cookies. That's why I generally steer clear of dollar stores. I love the sugar trash but dang I should be on the look out for real food. I do love the little sponge gizmo that I bought at D G- only a dollar for two sponges. I wiped down several wall areas yesterday and feel saintly and cleaner now.

Apples are good for the deer to eat too. We have put apples out for them before; and they all disappear. Enjoy your day.

@LindaOhio I really don't need a deer to hop my fence though Rufus would love it.

The Dollar General stores close by me all have a $1 isle. Sometimes, there are good deals to be found there. I got two huge bottles of Dawn Platinum for $1 each, a huge score. I stop by one of them off and on, because some items are cheaper than my regular grocery. I need bargains in my life!

@MarieCoyle I was surprised that there was a five dollar discount on top of the other sales.

@sallypup I think most, if not all, of the Dollar General gives you $5 off every Saturday on a $25 purchase, with a receipt? I never seem to time that right.

That’s great! I noticed Dollar General had better deals on water and Coke than my grocery store, but I never am able to find any food deals there. Perhaps I’m not looking for the right things. Your planters sound like a real score!

You sure got a good deal from the General, Time to check them out online. I am used to ordering for delivery from Walmart every month but I will take a little comparison online,

That's the trouble with big planters and with raised garden beds. They takes a lot to fill them. You did well with your purchases.
