Racist dog?

I can't tell what's supposed to be "straight" and what's supposed to be "funny" any more. This story was actually in my news feed this morning. A police dog attacked a someone who would not stop for police? I think the guy is expected to survive. Why is the race of the guy relevant? Or the breed of the dog? Had you heard about this story? Are they poking fun at claims of alleged "racial profiling"?
A police dog mauled a Black man in Ohio during a July 4th traffic stop after he surrendered to authorities with his hands raised in the air following a "lengthy pursuit," according to officials.

If the dog was trained to sniff out narcotics and the man had taken some recently or had them in his possession the dog will attack. A retired police canine that became someone's pet attacked my mother out of the blue one day. She had finished her first round of chemotherapy and the dog got a whiff of it and went for her throat.

@AmbiePam She was shaken up badly but was ok thank goodness. Not sure what happened to the dog, if anything.

You know it makes me wonder if the dog has in a way learned to differentiate between the races of people due to what he has seen and learned from the police he works with.

More likely the reaction of the person to the dog.

@TheHorse it could be but then animals learn certain things from their owners like children learn from their parents and also often react differently with various races, Just saying,

@RasmaSandra Do lower animals have a conception of "race" among humans? I do not know.

Sometimes that is difficult for me as well. Your picture of the snake is taken awfully close.

@celticeagle Seeing a rattlesnake is always a little bit "exciting."

It's a juvenile rattlesnake that I walked right over on a trail. It was only about two feet long, and I was about four feet away when I took the photo. They can only strike about half the length of their body, so I was safe.

I hadn't heard about that. The dog just obeyed his training. Hope the handler is charged

@TheHorse The way I read the story yes as at least here state troopers are over the others when both are on the scene.

We adopted a dog. Wonderful dog. Who knows what she had been before we took her in. She chased after one of our best friends who happened to be black. I can still hear Bernie yelling for me to come "get my dog!" Never chased anyone else.

@TheHorse Orange dog. Red Heeler mix. Came out of North Idaho where there are some super bad butts- if you get my drift. Like Montana has some but worse.

@sallypup North Idaho. Maybe they DID train it to be racist. But they'd have a hard time doing so in my town. There are about ten black people in the whole town, and one of those is my buddy who visits from Chicago every Summer.

@TheHorse These dogs are trained to follow the officers commands.

@TheHorse yeah, I think this is a problem with the handler rather than the dog.

I reckon so In an ideal world, the cop with the dog would have been a better handler and held the dog back, as it sounds like the perp was finally complying.

The dog was trained to do what it does. My advice to all people even if you are innocent, don't run from the police ever.

Why would anyone run from the police? They're not all guys and gals I would have over for a Seder dinner, but they're just doing their jobs.

If the police dog was properly trained, only one of the driver's arms would have suffered any injury as they are trained to latch onto an arm and hold on until receiving the command to release. Claiming he was mauled is the media's way of sensationalizing the story.

I haven't read an account of the extent of injury. I did read that the attending officers gave the man first aid. That made me think we wasn't clutching in vain at his spilling entrails, or anything like that. But I don't know.

As you say, why mention the colour at all? I remember being surprised when a doctor was revealed as being a woman. I can't remember if it was in a book or on TV or whatever but, in those days, there weren't many women doctors so I was a bit surprised.
