Name plates and number plates

Long ago...when I was in 9th grade I think, one of the aunt's lost her husband. She was vacating the quarter given to her, all her things were being packed, and everything that she had accumulated across a period of almost 25 odd years brought back some memories and tears. The final frontier was the name plate. The number of the apartment and under it was uncle's name. She just couldn't remain composed at the thought that uncle would no longer be returning to the same flat, and sobbed a lot holding on to that now not of any use name plate. So I have never added name on the flat. Always the number. It serves the purpose. Right? Why set myself up for tears later on? The reason this issue has surfaced is, they are contemplating uniform name plates for the entire complex. I don't want to express the issue I have. Rather I am scared of expressing it, because death is something certain. Somebody or the other will die, and then all will be pointing fingers at me. I have had such issues before for sharing dreams. But I don't want my father's name on name plate, and the members are insisting on it. This, I feel, is extreme interference.

I'm sorry they're being insistent, vanny. I hope you had a good Independence Day. (I sent you a WhatsApp message. Haven't you set WhatsApp up on your new phone?)

@vandana7 Yeah, I guess... It's just annoying when other people can control what we want to do. Oh, okay. You're very welcome, Dearheart.

I agree that they shouldn't really be able to force you to have the name plate. I'm not sure what you can do about it though.

@JudyEv I do snap Judy. Never without valid reason. Just that I cannot get across to these people. They are kinda, anything she says we are going to go against it.

The new committee is hell bent on disturbing privacy...invasion of privacy ..there are two flats downstairs..two cousins bought it...they let it out such a way that one has a commercial unit and the other has residential unit - so in the night times bedrooms privacy is not disturbed for the residential unit. Bedrooms open into the common area, and that no man's land is what the committee wants to use. With so much information about bedrooms reaching the net, they don't care, right to passage is claimed. I opposed it so cudgels are taken against me. The pedestrian walkway is usurped. This lane has too many roads and gates feeding it, that too at close proximity to our gate. Added to that there is a school where children only 3 feet or so study. When two cars are parked parallel with space in between for the driver to enter, you bet the view for me becomes difficult. Its kinda dare...approach the authorities if you want, and be more isolated. Added to that is the fact that my senile father keeps provoking them with arbitrary statements and authority that he does not have. I sure understand why people want to send elderly into old age homes with this kinda senility. That ...is what is on my plate.

@vandana7 This all sounds quite horrendous. I'm so sorry. It seems quite a hopeless situation.

It is uncommon to have name plates in houses here in my country. Although professional signs are common on the front walls of the houses in the countryside. Image Credit: preview.redd.it

I agree that offices and professional services require such name plates. For residential purposes, I think it does not make sense. In the same house, you could have so many living. Putting only one name out there while other members are ordering things online. But even so, there would be reasons for disturbances to sentiments.

Did you try saying that you have security concerns by putting your name on the plate? Just be ambiguous enough that they understand and do not give any details?

The lady who is in charge is not even a graduate. It is difficult to get across to her. For now, somehow, it seems to have fizzled out is, lack of funds. But I am sure it will be brought to the fore. The concern was, .... swiggy, zomato, amazon, flipkart etc., send guys who keep knocking wrong doors. The reasons are ...1. the door numbers are not conspicuous...honest. 2. They have put grills such that their door numbers are not visible. 3. The flats are not numbered clockwise; 4. These boys don't read even if they can. They have painted "visitors vehicles are not allowed inside" outside the gate. But my driver who was a medical representative, did not read that!!! LOL Anyway, legally, it is obligatory for us to have a place inside the complex for visitors parking. Who follows the rules anyway. LOL

I agree. It could just as well say "Occupied" under the flat number.

That should certainly work. I am kinda disturbed with recent developments. We cannot stop them. They have allocated parking to one of the flat members outside the compound - that is pavement. Pedestrians cannot walk two cars are parked adjacent to each other with about one and a half feet or so gap effectively going well into road. The lane is fed by our 2 gates, the gate of the apartment opposite, there are two other lanes opening into it, apart from the gates of neighbors on either sides. To top it all, the lane is not one way, so traffic is moving up and down and there is a school so when I am pulling out my car, I am terrified. Even a stray dog would cause accident. Only our building folks are behaving like this.

When you share or rent a place, those choices aren't usually yours to make, despite personal preference. Having a name go with a number helps people who know who's living where.

While that is true, that name does not indicate all members of the family. Right? So if I order something and my father's name is out there, how does it really show both of us in this house? Every time a new tenant arrives, will they expect the tenant to have a new name or the name plate be changed every time? I find the thought is rather immature.
