I am 61 years old and already part of the senior citizen in my country, the Philippines. I have enjoyed the perks of being a senior citizen when I purchased tickets for domestic airfare. I have also availed of discounts from restaurants and hotels and even on groceries and bakery products. What are the perks of senior citizen i. your country and what age is considered as one?

I think that the minimum age to be a senior citizen in America is 62 years of age since I am now eligible to receive free food from a food bank and collect Social Security..

How does the food bank works? Is it available to all senior citizens?

@florelway Food banks serve people who are poor as well, no matter how old you are. Most food banks require proof of income, and if you make too much money, you are not able to get food. Basically, they keep people out who can afford to buy their own. If you find a rare food bank that doesn’t require proof of income, there is no stopping anyone from getting food. Most food banks only allow so much food to be taken per month. It isn’t an unlimited supply.

According to the United States government, people are senior citizens at the age of 62 in America. Most of the advantages I think of are restaurant discounts, although some restaurants don’t give those discounts until the age of 64. Some even give those restaurant discounts for those in their mid fifties, but most require you to be at least sixty. In addition, a lot of movie theaters give discounts to senior citizens. The popular AARP organization specializes in deals and discounts once people hit the age of fifty. But there are American Mylotters who are senior citizens who can tell you more as they are living that right now.

Here the age for senior citizen is 60 years. I am not sure of the perks available to senior citizens as I have still to reach there.

We're fine with senior being 60 but some sectors here are lobbying for a lower retirement age at 55.

I think, on an average the global benchmark for senior citizen is 60 yrs...few countries might have +/- 2-3 years

"Senior citizens" in the US are 62 years or older. I don't know if anything still gives Senior discounts on anything. Years ago grocery stores gave a 10% discount on groceries, restaurants gave a 10% discount and theaters gave a discount to senior citizens but I don't believe any of those are still available now. I KNOW grocery stores stopped doing that as well as movie theaters, at least in my part of the US.

@florelway I don't know. I wasn't old enough to get the perks but I worked in retail and the perks disappeared years ago here.

In my country, we still have those perks. There are movie houses here that even give free entrance to senior citizens every Monday. What could have caused them to stop giving perks unless items are on promo.

It is 62 here at least for retirement. But some perks start as early as 55

That's good getting perks earlier is the best especially on travel and accommodation...Some people in their sixties are already fired going to many places.

In the US it's 62. You can join AARP (for retired persons) when you're 50. We get free produce and sometimes chicken once a month in a senior program. Enjoy your day.

The age is 65 here. Senior citizens can enjoy discounts from some shops, apply for social allowance (if your asset is below certain amount).
