Bashers!

I have shared that my brother-in-law's wife is a social media influencer. As with anyone who makes videos on social media as their job, she is putting herself out there. The public has access to her personal life and business, at least those that she shared online. But of course, with background and IP, one can certainly pinpoint her location, for instance. My brother-in-law is okay with it, my husband and I are not. And so, whenever we get together during holidays, for example, we turn away or cover our faces and motion for her that we don't want to be included on her videos. Yes, she's one of those who always have to have her cellphone camera on whenever something is happening. So far, she's careful not to show us in her videos. At least, out of her videos that I have seen. I do not follow her, nor do I have her on my friend's list, but you know how these things show up on your timeline whenever a friend of yours liked or shared something? Well, our niece shared her one video where she is getting bashed in the comments section. She's making general statements about life here in the US, and one commented that she is spreading misinformation. Another called her "stupid"; another called her an "idiot". While we're not friends, I feel terrible for her. I don't think we should call anybody names. But that is social media, anyone can be as cruel or as mean as they want without accountability. The sad part is, she is responding to these comments and fighting back. She's essentially giving them the time of day to explain herself. I want to message her and tell her just ignore those comments and block them, but a friend of hers already beat me to telling her that in the comments. So, I thought to myself, oh good, hopefully she does what her friend suggested. I am actually surprised when she said no, and that she will give them "exactly what they deserved." Good thing I did not join the "fun".

It wasn't very smart to bash the country you're living in. I'm surprised she didn't realize this would sadly happen.

I don't think that that's how she really feels. I may be wrong, but I think she wants virality and hoping one of her videos will go viral. But what do I know, I am so out of the loop with everything on social media.

@Raine38 That is sad. I don't know how anyone can be happy chasing fame. You are very kind to be concerned when she has treated you so poorly.

@AmbiePam She's still family, and we still support family. Of course, if she touched my loved ones, then she'll answer to me. I don't care if people are mean to me, I'm too old for drama and I can get past that. But if they go after my parents, younger siblings, and husband...

I think they deserve this after what they planned to do with you and your husband

I hope she learns a lesson this time, but based on her reaction I doubt it.

It can be easy to get caught up in the drama people post. I have been guilty of the same. I had to walk away from Facebook during the hight of the pandemic because things got real ugly.

Yes, same here! It's hard not to get sucked in during elections, or anything that is happening on a bigger scale.

Reacting to online trolls is like feeding the sharks. They'll keep coming back for more.

Believing the Internet affords them freedom and anonymity, people can be so cruel.

Yes, it's awful and sad. But I remember that that is not the main purpose of these social media websites. Some just ruin it for everyone.
