Sea days what do you do?

We had 9 days at sea before we reached New York. Sea days are very interesting & you can fill your day from morning to evening. There are insight lectures in the theatre by actors, explorers, botanists, former Concorde pilot, Generals, Astronauts etc etc.The library was spread over 2 decks containing 1,00s of books. Films in the theatre & every evening there were two shows String quartets playing around the ship. Bands playing in the evening in the Ballroom. Dancing at different times & in different venues. Excercise classes, sword fencubg the list goes on & on. There was also a gym, 3 swimming pools tow outside & one inside. A spa area with saunas and beauty treatments. Tennis courts & bowls & deck quoits. You can learn languages during the day which including French, Spanish, Cantonese. There were other classes of Bridge, Art classes & craft classes, ice & fruit carving demonstrations. Meeting with friends for drinks or just for a chat & making new acquaintences. Of course there was the food too all day long breakfast, lunch & dinner plus a late night buffet but the highlight was the afternoon tea in the Queens Ballroom a very formal affair with white gloved waiters entering armed with silver teapots, finger sandwiches, cakes & scones with clotted cream & strawberry jam & a harpist or string quartet playing in the background. This is every day & some people do go to each meal & eat like there is no tomorrow & you can visibly see the changes in size. We would skip lunch every day & if we had afternoon tea we would not go to dinner. I actually lost a stone as l was very strict with what l ate. At home l usually eat once a day but l can see the temptation of over indulging. At 6pm everything became so much more formal. Men had to wear jackets & women cocktail dresses. However for those who did not wish to they could dress smart casual & dine in the buffet & go to the onboard pub where there were quizzes & folk singers. There were cocktail parties & on formal gala nights there were themes, Black & white, Red & Gold, twenties night & maquerade ball when everyone dressed up in their finery. Some say it must be boring on a cruise but believe me you can do as much or as little as you wish. It is there for the taking if you want it. I intend to be even more discilpined as most days we were up & out around the ship from 8AM to 2AM nearly every night.

@garymarsh6 Now I’m warming to the notion of a cruise. A nice long sea voyage is just what the doctor orders. I did 14 days South Africa to Australia long time ago. Not a cruise, just an Italian immigrant boat with no entertainment.

The Atlantic was not as nice as 9 days across the Indian ocean. Lovely warm sunny days blue skies, turqoise seas, dolphins & flying fish it was lovely to see.

@xFiacre Eek we avoided a massive storm crossing the Atlantic but crossing over we had to head towards Canada to have a poor man medivac'd as he had a heart attack! It was in the middle of a notorious fog bank. It was quite eerie how the helicopter ever found us lord knows!

It sounds like there is so much to do while at sea that one could never exhaust the possibilities.

@garymarsh6 My nemesis would be the constant availability of food. I can imagine myself grazing all day long and having to be lifted off the ship by a crane at the next port of call.

@DWDavis Some people were like that. I ran a group for 500 people we all met 3 days into the cruise & 3 days before the end of it & you could see the difference in sizes of people!

You took me to the Bahamas cruise I went on a few years ago It was for 3 days and yes there was enough and more to keep ourselves occupied. We had a formal dinner with the Captain on the last night and we posed singly with the Captain. The next day there was announcement that we could buy that photo and it cost 10 dollars. You guessed it right most did not buy (lol)

Wow, I've never heard my friends talk about things like this happening when they went on cruises, were you on the Queen Mary?

No we were on Queen Victoria. The Queen Mary also sailed on the same day but we were not interested in that itinerary. We did a full circumnavigation of the world going through the Panama canal & Suez Canals.

WOW, those are the kinds of cruises I'd want to be on. My friends tend to go on those cruises that the Princess Cruise line offers, usually they go to places like the Caribbean or whatever. Not my cup of tea though.

This brings back so many memories. I loved our cruise for all the reasons you mention - and I ended up winning the Bingo Jackpot which paid for my trip. As you say, you're spoilt for choice on a cruise like that.

I did not play bingo l did once though but to bring a nasty woman down who was boasting & belittling people. She said they always do the quiz & they always win as most people onboard are thick & stupid. That's like a red rag to a bull so we went to the quizzes you can guess who won. To be honest l was not really that interested in the prizes in fact l gave them away. My prize was seeing her face like she was sucking a wasp or something. Then on top l won the bingo. Oh the looks l got from her were worth a thousand times the prize money! Priceless!

@garymarsh6 I only played once before the jackpot night so those who had played every day for the whole trip were a bit miffed. It's all just chance though, isn't it? Some people are so unkind and up themselves. I'm glad you beat her at the quiz.

9 days at Sea sounds pretty interesting but tough as well. In which year did you make this trip? How did you deal with sea sickness? There were a lot of things to do and be involved in during the Ship trips.

The cruise ships have been described as floating cities, so I would imagine if you could run out of things to do in a city you could be bored on a cruise.

You did well not to overindulge. I would find that hard as I love food! My Mum went to America on the Queen Mary back in the 1960s and told me she gained several pounds on the crossing!

They certainly do. These cruises are aimed more for the more mature passenger. No waterslides, go carts, funfares or bumper cars. It is more cultural.

I have mixed & worked with people from all walks of life as you no doubt have done too. I find it really amusing watching these so called fake posh imposters trying to lord it all over others & making hideous faux pas. That is my wicked little vice Gill. I laugh my head off inside when they can't even use a full set of cutlery in the correct way. Those with proper graces would not belittle others like some of these fakers do.
