What do you do with the last portion?

When I was growing up my mother was always careful to share anything out fairly. I’m not sure whether this was because she felt hard-done-by as a child, but anyway any treats would be scrupulously shared out between the three of us (even though I was an only child). In those days having just one child was far less common, and there was a misconception that only children were spoiled and selfish. I was often told (by my peers) that I must be selfish, and I started to believe it. So then at university, I was taken aback by the behaviour of my first ‘proper’ boyfriend. If there was one chocolate left in a box for example, he would gallantly say ‘You have it’ and I would say ‘No, you have it’ – expecting that we would then cut it in half so we could both have some. But no, he would just say ‘Oh OK then' and eat it! And he had a sister so I was expecting to witness this legendary unselfish behaviour. I quickly realised that people who have grown up with siblings are far more likely to selfishly grab whatever they can get before the others get it! Now my family laugh at the way I always share things out. If there is one slice of cake left between me and my partner, he will ask if I want it and of course I will cut it in half. It depends on how much I like whatever it is. Often I give it to hubby.Or we will share it.When there are two pieces of anything he often asks me to choose first, in case one is more desirable than the other.

I remember people expressing those thoughts about an only child. There were four of us weans, so who got there first got the prize!

I have an older sister, and with the last piece of anything, my mom would have one of us cut it in half, and the other pick which piece they wanted.

I have a brother, he is younger, we are both NOT at all selfish. I used to cut in half the last chocolate to share with him, he insisted that I have it, but he finally accepted his half. My husband was an only child, he had the habit to have for himself, sometimes he forgets we are two, I never forget to share with him. He is not selfish, he immediately tells me I am sorry I had last, when he noticed he forgot to share.

You should have said, "Let's cut this in half and share it.". Of course he thought you meant for him to take it... you told him to take it. It depends on what it is... If I know it's Pretty's favorite thing, I'll tell her she can have it. If it's mine, I will tell her I'm eating it... If we both like it, more than likely, I'll tell her she can have it.

Well, as I live alone, the "last" slice is always mine.

I always ask if my hubby wants it. If he doesn't, then I will eat it. And vice versa. Have a good day.

My parents instilled in us,my sister and I to share equally whatever it is. There was no first come first serve rule. I grew up with that so whatever it is we share the last piece with whoever I am with
