This shocked me

As I was scrolling through my fb feed today I saw a post showing pictures of some of the foods we consume that have this on the label: "Ingredients derived from a bioengineered source." Hellmanns mayo was one of them. I love this mayo and is the only one I buy. Ever. I thought it wasn't true so went to my fridge, took the jar of mayo, and looked at the label. It does say that. In the back. It didn't say that before. What does that phrase even mean? Why is it used? And is it bad now to consume this mayo or any other products with that on the label?

I imagine most of us eat something with an ingredient like that. Look for the no GMO (genetically modified organism) label to be sure. I noticed the no GMO label showing up more and more, and I guess it’s because so many things are being exposed. It just means some of those ingredients are being altered in a lab. And you never know exactly what that all entails.

@lovebuglena It always seems to come down to money. Companies take the cheapest route.

@AmbiePam Anything to save a buck I guess. I am always shocked at the amount of stuff in the ingredients of a product that I either can't pronounce or have no idea what the heck it is. Sometimes it's like a whole long paragraph of ingredients for a product. What happened to less is more?

Is it really necessary to do that though? Kind of like these days it seems they put soy lethicin in most of the stuff out there. Why?

No. It's perfectly safe. It just means some indgeretents were mass-produced in a lab, and weren't locally sourced. It's a way of taking things we use, and recreating them using technology . It can scare people, but it's not harmful.

If hubby sees it on the label he immediately puts it back on the store shelf. I think I will make an exception for the mayo and keep using it. I don't really like the other brands.

@lovebuglena It would be hard to find something that isn't engineered in a lab somewhere these days.

@kaylachan We didn't have that back in the day. Why the need for it now?

This is on a LOT of labels now! You have to read every single one!! I noticed it on Picante Sauce recently. I will not purchase anything with bio-engineered ingredients. It is lab created and part of the push to have everyone eat vegan. No thanks!

@lovebuglena We are spoiled here in the south for a local mayo, Blue Plate. Now there is a bit of competition with a new one called Duke's.

@kareng Duke’s is far from new. It was popular in the south in the 60’s-70’s and my grandmother loved it!

I have discovered that a lot of the food we eat is something other than what we thought of. Years ago, a friend of mine had a big cramp in one of his feet. I ran to the fridge has I had seen a beautiful bottle of orange juice. I took it to where he was with a glass on the other hand while reading the label. The orange juice did not have a single drop of oranges. It was made with corn syrup and orange COLOR!!! After that I decided that I would cook more. I make my own mayo. I make it in 1 minute with the mini pimer. After I make it I place it inside a small Tupperware in the fridge. Awesome. It is one egg, oil (100 sunflower oil), salt and the juice of half a lemon (fresh lemon).

Sometimes you get juice and there's hardly any juice in it.

“Ingredients derived from a bioengineered source” means the product contains an ingredient from a bioengineered crop. That means corps that have been modified through certain laboratory techniques. In the case of Hellmann's it could be the sugar, the oil or even the eggs.

@lovebuglena The food given to the hens can be and so the eggs become bioengineered.

Eh, I don't care anymore, I did at first, but honest to God, I cannot get away from all the weird stuff in food. It is in every blessed thing it seems. Yes, I do not remember my mayo saying that either..Hellmans too. Well I don't mean exactly I don't care, it just seems out of any control of mine, as it is dang everything now.. We are bio engineered to..I am sure all this stuff is changing humanity's DNA chain.

If you wanna eat only food with fewer ingredients and ingredients we know and can pronounce we either have to spend A LOT more money or stop eating them altogether.

I think that means not 100% natural ingredients which is hard to find.

It’s not harmful, but because it’s not “natural” it kinda scares a lot of people. But your Mayo is still safe to eat.

Bioengineering is necessary to create enough food to feed our population. Some of it is bad, some of it is good. The label doesn't give specifics, but I hope in the future we will know more about the food that they put on the shelves. It is actually pretty scary. I wish I could make all of my own food from scratch. Btw, mayo is pretty easy to make.

It wasn't needed in the past. I guess we have a much bigger population now so maybe that's why.

We would probably be surprised by a lot of things if we really knew what was going into/being done to our food.

Here's what the internet says: “Bioengineering” is a synonym for the more familiar terms “GMOs,” “genetically modified”, and “genetically engineered.” A bioengineered food or ingredient must contain some of the newly introduced DNA." I don't like the DNA part. Ask Hellman's what it means. I'm sure they will answer you. Have a good Sunday.

I just don't get why the need for it now? We didn't do that in the past. Does that make food cheaper to make?

@lovebuglena I honestly don't know what the reason is for GMOs.
