Short story: One day, we will be consumed by the Earth, if we continue to consume it, so wantonly

The American Indian Chief, Chief Yellow Cloud, was named this by the North American Calvary, as he always retreated from them, seemingly cowardly, every time, that they encroached into his tribe’s territory. His real name was in fact, Chief Gray Cloud. He was named this, because he was neither black, nor white, in his thinking, but always found a middle way to solve all problems that he faced. And so, when the American Whites threatened his peace, he would simply take his tribe, and move it further into the mountains, away from these intruders. There came a time though, where there was just nowhere else that he could move to. North American white men, were brazenly entering his tribe’s lands, to search for gold there, and to kill his buffalo, for their own needs. Yellow Cloud began then to fight back. He killed off a few of these greedy gold-diggers. Some had been greedy with the women folk of his tribe too. They were savages, these white men, caring about nothing, except for themselves. It was then, that the American troops were sent in to dispose of this tribe, given orders to kill them all, right down to the last man. Yellow Cloud fought bravely with his tribe against this greater force of men, and by the time that the fighting was over, he was covered in blood, but not yet dead. He was captured thus by the Army, and was hung, by the neck, until dead, in their garrison, stationed in Fort Lardsdale. After this massacre of his tribe, the other tribes hearing of this massacre, at the hands of the American Army, renamed this chief, Chief Brave Cloud. Chief Brave Cloud was asked to say something, before he was hung, as the troops were amusing themselves, drinking beer, all around him. He looked down at the Earth, and said: “Everyone should treat the Earth, and those of the Earth, wisely, otherwise, one day, the Earth will simply rise up, and cover all with itself, in one way, or another, the Earth wins all fights against it, in the end.” “We were of the Earth. You are intruders to the Earth. Make friends with it, quickly, as otherwise, it will squash you, as its enemy.” And then, they strung him up, and hanged him. I like the words of the late American Indian Chief Gray Cloud saying that we should take care of the planet.

Yes, we should take care of our home, instead of exploiting it to the hilt.

Americans always treated the American Indians with disrespect and did their best to destroy the people. Today they live on reservations. They are their own nation and not subject to the laws of the United States. They were here first before white men took their land from them. It's sad what they did to Chief Grey Cloud. He was a wise chief for his people.

@innertalks It's a shame people are treated like that.

@just4him It is a great shame, and it is shameful of them to treat people like that too.

Yes, I have read of many such bad treatments handed out to the American Indians at the hands of the whites there. I have heard that some British Officers used biological warfare, and spread smallpox to the Indians, by giving them smallpox-infected blankets to use. Indians, like the Aboriginals here in Australia, were not allowed to vote, in some American states, right up until 1957. In Australia, the natives were originally labelled as part of the fauna, and then they were called wards of the state. They were not allowed to vote in some states here, until after 1965. And: "It was not until 1984 that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people gained full equality with other electors under the Commonwealth Electoral Amendment Act 1983. This Act made enrolling to vote at federal elections compulsory for Indigenous Australians."

Thanks. Sad stories often carry a poignant lesson in them for others too.

Yes, I like the native wisdom, and their connection to the Earth.

Anything goes has been our way and more so increasingly. We do not seem to care about the blessings showered on us day in and day out. We are guests on this planet and not wanton occupiers. Pride goes before a fall has been proved right. Chief Brave Cloud's departing words ring true to mankind and we should heed them before it is too late. We are at the tipping point of inviting the wrath of planet Earth, which has nurtured us patiently despite our ingratitude. We are blissfully in a state of denial.

Thanks, siva. We are all swimming in denial, and that is not in the River Nile, either. Yes, the Earth has been plundered, and pillaged, bombed, and excavated, and depleted of its covering of trees too. I do not know how much more it can take, before it simply stops working for us in our favour, and works against us instead.

@innertalks Science also highlights the precarious state of the planet leading a few to look at other real estate to expand our presence. Any other habitable place is on the radar and that pursuit is gathering pace to beat the deadline of Earth giving up on us. The supposed riches are too tempting, but are we worthy to inherit/exploit them?
In August, NASA is sending an orbiter to the space object, which may be the partial remains of planet-forming material made of nickel and iron

@Shiva49 Maybe they had to invent a new number to describe its worth??? I had to look up quintillion, it is a very big number, and maybe Elon Musk will smell some profit for himself in that too, but he will wait until NASA pays for the investigation first; no point in wasting his own money on a possible red herring.

Human beings have exploited the earth to a great extent. We'll suffer at the end.

Yes, not living in harmony with our planet has many repercussions, and we will suffer the consequences, for our behaviour, at some time in the future. Some of us are noticing it even now. Others continue to deny the truth.
