Thanksgiving week is upon us! Yes, Thanksgiving is that magical day where we give thanks for all we have…then go get in line at midnight and beat people up to get a deal on a TV that we don’t need. It’s gonna be a turkey of a week…and today’s “gonna” song is a real turkey for you who hate country music (meaning Linda? NO!!!!! ). The Words I’m Gonna Have to Eat - Bill Phillips Hey, look who’s back! Liz Anderson! Yes, the woman who gave us Lynn Anderson and the Merle Haggard song featured earlier in this countdown is back with another song that’s a little on the lighthearted side. She was good at that. In fact, one of the hits she had herself as a singer was called “Mama Spank,” with the narrator talking to the wild-living husband like he’s a six-year-old. And if you listen to “(My Friends Are Gonna Be) Strangers,” there’s a sprinkling of humor in it (“the only thing I can count on now is my fingers,” and of course, the title). Here she did that again, and Bill Phillips delivered brilliantly. Bill Phillips is a long-forgotten country singer (forgotten long before he died in 2010) who had a significant part in Dolly Parton’s career: his recording of her song “Put It Off Until Tomorrow” (with her singing backup vocals) was a major catapult for her success. He had a brief and enjoyable career before getting lost in the flood of late-60s “countrypolitan” stuff.
