And So Thanksgiving Begins

I went turkey hunting last Saturday. There were no early risings, turkey calls, camouflage, or shotguns involved. There was a grocery cart and an open-topped chest freezer. I didn’t head to the deep woods. I found my quarry at our local grocery store. The missus told me to bag a turkey between 13 and 14 pounds. I found a nice bird that weighed in at 13.3 pounds. For those of you who speak metric, that’s about 6 kilos. Said turkey resided in our refrigerator until it was ready to go into the brine. Little known fact: Frozen turkeys may have been in a zero-degree warehouse for as much as 3 years before they reach the market. I picked out the turkey. My better half filled two grocery carts with other essentials for our Thanksgiving dinner. Stay tuned for the next phase of our November Holiday Odyssey. ©2023 Douglas W Davis All Rights Reserved

@DaddyEvil Between the time change and the vaccinations I had last Friday, my stomach and arthritis have been bothersome, too. Not bothersome enough to keep me from enjoying today's dinner and desserts.

Happy Thanksgiving! I'm happy things finally settled down enough for me to spend time here this month. I wrote a few posts this week about my activities leading up to today but am only just now getting them published on the site.

@DWDavis I've had two vaccinations this week so haven't really been here a lot... vaccinations always make my muscles and joints sore. The latest Covid vaccination gave me an upset stomach, too. That's always fun. I'm just glad I got the turkey and fixings ready yesterday so I didn't need to do anything except eat today.

I just took the turkey out of the oven. It's resting on the stove right now. We'll be eating in about 30 minutes.

Have a nice Thanksgiving. I'm eating out. I want to relax this year and not cook, clean, and be frazzled.

My goal for next Thanksgiving is to convince my missus that we should go out. It will depend on whether our two boys will be able to come home for the holiday.

You got out of it quite lightly - just one item to purchase albeit a very important one. I've been transcribing my mother's diaries. She would breed turkeys for sale and one dressed out at 20 lbs (9 kg). That is one big turkey. I hope you have a great Thanksgiving.

We bought a pre-cooked, smoked turkey this year. It was really good. Hope your Thanksgiving was A++++++.

I considered buying a pre-cooked turkey, but the missus wouldn't agree to the idea.

@DWDavis It made it a bit easier on my hubby since he had to do all the preparing. We ate boxed dressing, etc.

You did it in a far more hygienic way than regular hunting.

Once upon a time, I might have been able to hunt turkeys in the wild. Not these days. Hunting them in the supermarket is preferrable now.

A huge turkey and two shopping trolleys! How many guests are there?

There were only five of us. My missus prepares for twice as many as will be there. We have leftovers enough for the next couple of days at least.
