Do You Ever Calculate Your Contribution to a Party?

It may seem like a silly thing to do. But of course, I am a money hound and quite anal retentive about it. To me, everything has an associated monetary value attached to it. And well, I like working with, dealing with, and thinking about money. And so, sometimes I do actually calculate my contribution to a party. Take this past Thanksgiving, which my wife and I spent with the family at my sister's house. We did bring some stuff that was contributed. So, what did I bring and what was the "associated cost of my evening?" Two family size bags of rippled potato chips $5.38 Two 16 ounce tubs of French onion dip $3.38 One 12 pound spiral cut ham $8.64 Two bags of Dorito's chips $4.50 Two pies my wife made $10.00 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Total, $31.90 I'd call that an unsurpassed value considering what we ate and what we drank in beer and booze. We could not have gone to a restaurant for that and had what we had. And unsurpassed as well was of course, the time spent with family. For just $15.95 a head, we had a great time, great food, were more than stuffed, and I only did the math because it's fun for me to do and I was curious.

Do I add up what I've spent on food when going to a family house and I offer to I'm asked to bring some food so the host doesn't have to over it all? Nope! Actually, I always offer to bring something knowing the fact that my 8-year-old has a lot of food allergies. I ask them what they are going to have and if there is something I could bring or I'll tell them hey I'll bring this since I know he'll be the only one eating it or that there might be 1 or 2 other people there as well that will be. I don't take the time to count it because it doesn't matter. Unless someone is asking me to give them a certain amount of money then I do know and will contribute that way as a family member that will be there.

You know that time spent with family and friends is priceless, don't you? You can't put a price tag on it. Yes, you can put a price tag on what you brought to the party, but everything else is ---- Priceless.

But of course, and I sort of alluded to that when I said, "unsurpassed as well was of course, the time spent with family." If it is any consolation, I sent no bill and definitely ate and drank more than I spent and expect no bill in return. lol

Time spent with loved ones is more valuable than money. I don't keep track of what I spend (not much, I have limited income). They are what really counts.

Ultimately true. I believe I did allude to that in my post.

I reread your question. I thought you were keeping score. I had a friend who calculated every cent she spent and I didn't like that. Once, I told her I was making chicken salad for a church doing and she replied that tuna would be good enough for them, so why pay for chicken?

@porwest Oh, okay. I had a friend who knew exactly what she spent on each person. She resented every cent too. I don't know what happened to her. She sort of disappeared. She sold her house and car and who knows after that. Maybe she could be a character in one of your books???

I don't keep track of what I spend which is zero because we don't get invited anywhere. Glad you had a great time. Have a good week.
